High volume could equal high fines

Now that thousands of students have returned to Bloomington, the city is reminding all residents to keep noise at a moderate level or expect a large fine.

Famous female author visits IU

The audience laughed, cheered and clapped for best-selling author Elizabeth Gilbert on Monday night in the IU Auditorium. The mostly female crowd came to hear the renowned writer speak about her writing experiences. A majority of the audience had already read her acclaimed novel “Eat, Pray, Love,” which chronicles Gilbert’s trip around the world after a divorce. Others in the audience were in the middle of or almost done with the memoir.

Marching Hundred performs in Colts game

A day after playing in Memorial Stadium, the Marching Hundred traveled to a bit of a bigger venue. Playing in front of a crowd of more than 66,000 fans, the band became the first collegiate marching band to perform in Lucas Oil Stadium, the new home of the Indianapolis Colts.

IU students have a laugh as they plan a skit during a call out meeting at La Casa Saturday evening. The event served to inform students on how to get involved in Latino related organizations on campus and and as a time to socialize.

La Casa, IU’s Latino Cultural Center, kicked off the National Hispanic Heritage Month with icebreakers and food Friday through their new program, “Hola New Hoosiers.”

IU plans to amplify first-year experiences

IU is looking to enhance support for first-year students by launching the Office of First Year Experience Programs. The office is an extension of the Office of Orientation Programs, an office that had previously assisted students only until their first day of classes, said Jack Rhodes, associate vice provost and director of orientation programs. With the new office, Orientation Programs can offer support to students throughout their first year.

Involvement fair to host at least 200 student groups

The largest annual Student Involvement Fair offered at IU will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m today in the Indiana Memorial Union parking lot. Students can expect colorful banners and display tables from more than 200 organizations and volunteer groups from the IU and Bloomington community.

The other day I was reading through a couple of AP world news stories and I happened to stumble across a fashion article which boasted about the individuality and the freshness of the Spring/Summer 2009 London Fashion Week collections. You might wonder why I chose to mention the London fashion week at this particular point in time, but I feel that IU fashion is in desperate need of originality. It’s important to spend a little time talking about how crucial it is for each of us to have an individual fashion style.

Trustees pick architects for music building

The IU Board of Trustees selected the architects for the Jacobs School of Music’s new North Studio Building, which will be built north of the current Music Building Addition or the “round building” on Third Street, said Alain Barker, director of marketing and publicity at the music school.

On Sunday night, the Buskirk-Chumley Theater and Middle Way House welcomed the community to enjoy a night of opera at the theater. The 20th annual Night At The Opera is a fundraiser for Middle Way House, which provides support and shelter to victims and families of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

McCain doesn’t come across as a normal politician because he isn’t one. His likability grows on you. As I have followed him since he became the Republican party candidate and now nominee, my like for McCain has grown tremendously. I agree with him on the major issues facing America today and that, among many others, is reason enough to vote for him.

In an effort to prove her superiority in the education debate, Indiana Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Jill Long Thompson recently proposed that all Indiana children from birth to age five be sent one free book each month. She thinks this plan would help improve Indiana’s literacy rates, which admittedly could use some work. Now forgive us for being skeptical – after all, we know there is nothing that two-month-olds love more than a good book: They taste so good – but it appears that Long Thompson is desperate to prove she has ideas about education reform, even if they don’t make any sense.

Not fashionable

We need On Campus Voting

The Monroe County Election Board will be meeting this week to consider whether to establish an early-voting site on campus. If the Board does not approve an on-campus site, the options for IU-Bloomington students during this historic Presidential election will be clear: hitch a ride to a location off campus, or simply don’t vote.

Senior leads IU to tournament title

Despite her name, there was nothing short about Erica Short’s performance in the adidas Classic this weekend at Assembly Hall. The senior middle blocker and co-captain was named tournament MVP after recording 61 kills during the weekend, including an IU-record 24 in the Friday match against Valparaiso. Short said the record was a great accomplishment but was quick to credit her team as well.
