More than 70 dead after quake in Italy

L'AQUILA, Italy - A powerful earthquake in mountainous central Italy knocked down whole blocks of buildings early Monday as residents slept, killing more than 70 people in the country's deadliest quake in nearly three decades, officials said. Tens of thousands were homeless and 1,500 were injured.

The event, which was like a variety show, kicked off Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The month is traditionally celebrated in May, but IU observes it in April, Jennifer Lee, assistant professor of sociology, said. “It celebrates the accomplishments of all who have come before us,” Lee said.

1st female dean candidate to visit campus

The second week of potential dean of students visits will continue today with Lori Reesor, the current associate vice president for student success at the University of Kansas.

Hoosiers win in consecutive comeback

The weekend brought the Hoosiers  two up-hill contests and a drop in doubles points. Prevailing in a pair of 4-3 wins, the IU tennis team (12-7, 4-2) defeated Iowa and Minnesota in its first home Big Ten matches of the season.

Men place 1st, women 2nd at Pepsi Invite

The IU men’s track and field team proved they were the top squad this weekend by taking out recent indoor national champion Oregon to win the Pepsi Team Invitational in Eugene, Ore.

Junior pitcher Matt Bashore throws to a Chicago State batter on Tuesday at Sembower Field. The Hoosiers won 2 out of 3 in a series against the Illinois over the weekend.

Hoosiers gain 1st Big Ten series win

On a cold and rainy day last week, IU coach Tracy Smith paced back and forth on the diamond as his players looked on, eagerly awaiting the game-3 start of their first Big Ten series against Minnesota. The opposing dugout was empty. The umpire’s hands fought the wind as he announced the cancelation of the March 29 game.
