Offseason includes arrival of new coaches

Summer and the true off-season for IU women’s basketball are approaching their final hours as the team prepares for a new year. The past few months provided the Hoosiers time to rest and recover before the hard work of a new season begins.

Starting quarterback competition down to 3 underclassmen

The IU quarterbacks remain a long way from where IU Coach Kevin Wilson said he would like them to be by the season opener Sep. 3 against Ball State University. At this point in the fall practices, the competition has effectively been narrowed down to sophomores Dusty Kiel and Edward Wright-Baker and true freshman Tre Roberson.

IU alumni represent Hoosiers at PGA Championship

Only a few years ago, former Hoosier golfers Shaun Micheel, Dan Olsen and Jeff Overton were competing for Indiana in collegiate events. Today they are playing on the professional tour, representing the IU men’s golf program at major events such as the Professional Golf Association Championship, which took place Aug. 8 through 14 at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Ga.

Despite Indiana-Akron ties, Yeagley doesn’t see a rivalry

Assistant coaches under famed former Indiana Coach Jerry Yeagley helped the Indiana men’s soccer program hoist the national championship trophy in both 2003 and 2004. Coaches Todd Yeagley and Caleb Porter returned only a few years after graduating to help their alma mater capture College Cup titles, which had eluded both men during their stints as leaders of the Hoosier soccer team.

Young team looks to change fortunes

IU Women’s Soccer Coach Mick Lyon said he will think positively and use the opportunity provided by his team’s youth to make some tactical changes to help the team win more close, low-scoring matches. Over the past three seasons in 1-0 matches, the Hoosiers are 7-7, including five consecutive matches in 2008 when IU lost 1-0 to open the Big Ten schedule.

Trustees approve baseball, softball complex

IU baseball and softball will have a new complex for the 2013 baseball and softball seasons. The Board of Trustees approved the construction on Thursday with the goal of starting construction in spring 2012 and completing it for the 2013 seasons.

Freshmen basketball trio ready for fall

After working with current players and strength and conditioning coach Je’Nay Jackson for eight weeks, the 2011 freshman basketball players are already beginning to feel at home.

Defensive end, safety commit to IU football team

The IU football team added two players to their 2012 recruiting class with commitments from defensive end Shawn Heffern Aug. 8, and safety Sebastian Smith Aug. 9.

Men’s golf sets schedule for upcoming season

Although the individual players for the IU men’s golf team play in numerous events throughout the summer, they will come together this fall to begin the 2011-12 golf season.

Ohio safety becomes 17th commitment for 2012 football class

A day after bolstering their defensive line of the future, the IU football team received more good news for their defense with the commitment of safety Sebastian Smith on Tuesday. Smith, from Central High School in Pickerington, Ohio, is the Hoosiers’ 17th commit for the class of 2012 and second in as many days.

Current, former Hoosiers qualify for Olympic Trials

Current and former IU swimmers continued to compete at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships at the Stanford University Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto, Calif., with many posting times fast enough to qualify for the Olympic Trials.
