Hoosiers back in action

The consensus is in. And the men's basketball team is sick and tired of practicing. The Hoosiers know their own offense and their own defense, and it's making practice a bit hum-drum. IU, ranked No. 20 in the USA Today/ESPN poll, will finally get the chance to see shirts of a different color at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Assembly Hall when it meets Athletes in Action.

A living legacy for 28 years

Jerry Yeagley's career numbers define his success. The IU men's soccer head coach has been at the helm of the soccer program for 28 years, and has never posted a losing season.

Michigan State defense dominates Hoosiers

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Through the first half Sunday at the Breslin Center, it looked as if the Hoosiers had found a way to get past Tom Izzo and Michigan State's trademark defense. Similar to how IU cut through the Spartans at Assembly Hall Jan. 8, the Hoosiers built a large first-half lead behind good shooting. But by the time the second half came, Michigan State figured out the IU offense, and with Marcus Taylor leading the way, the Spartans slipped past the No. 23 Hoosiers 57-54. In the first meeting between the two teams this season, IU hit 14 of 26 three pointers. Junior point guard Tom Coverdale hit 6 of 8 from three-point range in the first half alone, and the Hoosiers coasted to an 83-65 victory.

Fiji utilizes exchanges, excitement to qualify for pole position

Phi Gamma Delta survived cold temperatures and the exchange problems that plagued many teams to earn the pole position for the 51st Men's Little 500. Fiji earned the pole by recording a time of 2:30.00 Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Delta Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon qualified second and third with times three seconds behind that of Fiji.

Hoosiers head into four-game weekend

Heading into the Indiana Invitational this weekend, the IU softball team looks to hone its skills before getting too far into the spring season schedule and into Big Ten play. The Hoosiers gained vital game experience over spring break as they played 12 games in 11 days and moved their record to 6-10-1. IU's three games scheduled for this past Wednesday and Thursday were postponed because of inclement weather.

A tough lesson learned

ATLANTA -- Junior Jeff Newton's right shoulder and bicep is emblazoned with artwork that is surrounded by the phrase "Refuse Limitations." Newton lived up to the tattoo Saturday night, scoring a career-high 19 points to lead the Hoosiers past Oklahoma in the national semifinals.

From Indiana to Iowa

Even Dane Fife would have booed Luke Recker. And he didn't feel sorry for his former teammate. Fife didn't have to boo. He played defense, and just about every one of the 17,456 fans in Assembly Hall Tuesday night took care of the jeering for him -- loudly, critically and without mercy. Recker's misses were cheered -- during warm-ups. Every time the he touched the ball, fans booed. Every time he looked into the stands, he saw signs with the phrases "Traitor," "Luke Who?" and "Luke Sucks." Every time he looked toward the scoreboard, his Iowa Hawkeyes fell further and further behind the Hoosiers until IU finished a 79-51 winner. It was Recker's first game in Assembly Hall since helping IU beat Iowa Feb. 27, 1999. It was about as bad a homecoming as Recker could have ever dreamed.

Big Ten Tournament begins today

The Big Ten Tournament has never gone true to form. No. 11 seed Illinois made a run to the championship game in 1999, the No. 1 seed has won only once in four seasons and last season sixth-seeded Iowa won four games in four days to earn the crown.

Outdoor season begins today

The Hoosiers look for some fun in the sun this weekend as the men's and women's track and field teams head to Arizona State University. Spring training is not the only thing happening in Arizona as the Sun Devils play host to the Baldy Castillo Invitational. This is the first outdoor meet of the season, and the warm weather will give IU the opportunity to do well.

New coach leads Hoosiers

The IU athletics department announced Wednesday that former University of Pacific coach Ray Looze Jr. will be the next men's swimming coach. Looze replaces Kris Kirchner at the helm of one of the Big Ten's most storied swimming programs.

Conference favorite?

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The scene looked ominous for the Hoosiers and perfect for Iowa. Senior guard Dane Fife stood outside IU's team huddle, head slumped and eyes toward the parque floor in Carver-Hawkeye Arena Sunday. The 6-foot-4 Hoosier guard had just picked up two fouls in 13 seconds and was relegated to the bench with 16:17 remaining in the first half. Last season, Fife picked up two early fouls, and his defensive assignment, Hawkeye guard Luke Recker, went nuts, scoring 27 points and erasing a 17-point halftime deficit that carried Iowa to a 71-66 victory.

Baffert does it at Derby

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- War Emblem showed up at Bob Baffert's barn a mere three weeks ago. Even the trainer joked that he would need his best and shortest training job to win the Kentucky Derby. Baffert came through.

Roadrunners repeat top finish in women's race

Jenn Wangerin did it again. Last year, the junior took the Roadrunners' final exchange and led her team to victory. This year was no different. With 20 laps to go, Wangerin took the bike and kept near the front of the pack.

Depth players lead team to wins

Saturday night, there weren't many smiles bigger than that of Hoosier center Rhys Anderson. It wasn't just that he had picked up a goal and an assist for his first multipoint game of the season. It wasn't just that he had done so against IU's biggest rival, Michigan State. It wasn't just that his efforts helped result in a 4-1 victory for the Hoosiers (6-2).

Team travels to Soutern Illinois to battle Salukis

Southern Illinois coach Bruce Weber and his men's basketball program are looking forward to facing the Hoosiers on Salukis hardwood for the first time. "It's been the talk of our town for the past two years," Weber said. "People are excited -- we'll be close to a sellout for the first time in 11 years. "Everybody's talking about Indiana coming here." Weber and the Salukis will host the Hoosiers tomorrow at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Ill. Tip off time is set for 4:05 EST.

1st place Hoosiers back on the road

Wednesday night's victory over No. 19 Ohio State, the Hoosiers find themselves in first place in the Big Ten standings with just three games left. That's the problem, though, for IU -- those three games. Two of those three are on the road before the Hoosiers close the regular season March 2 at Assembly Hall against an upstart Northwestern team. No. 23 IU begins the stretch with a noon visit to Michigan State Sunday.

Confident squad heads to NCAAs

The IU women's swimming and diving team begins its bid for the school's best ever finish at the NCAA Championships today at the Jamail Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. The Hoosiers best finish came in 1980 when they concluded the meet 11th.

Six athletes represent IU in national competion

Maurice Greene. Marion Jones. Gail Devers. IU. Last weekend, IU mixed with the top competition in the country at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Stanford, Calif. and emerged with five top-10 placements. "We were excited to get back into the national scene," IU men's coach Marshall Goss said of bringing six athletes to the Championships.
