No. 5 Billikens provide tough test

Two winning-rich soccer traditions clash tonight in Bloomington when the Hoosiers, winners of five consecutive matches, welcome the No. 5 St. Louis University Billikens into Armstrong Stadium. In their last five games, IU (7-3-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) has outscored their opponents 12-1, including four consecutive shutouts while upping their Big Ten lead to four points over Michigan. The Hoosiers last allowed a goal in the first half against Michigan on Oct. 5 -- totaling 433 consecutive shutout minutes.

Former IU walk-ons now have scholarships

Rudy" brought them into the limelight. They're the definition of what college football is all about. They're walk-ons. Senior Matt Foss and junior Kyle Warriner walked onto the IU football team in 1999 and 2000, respectively. This summer, both were given scholarships by IU coach Gerry DiNardo for their hard work and contributions to IU's special teams.

Defending champions visit Memorial Stadium

It isn't getting any easier for IU. Two weeks after losing to Northwestern in overtime, the football team will play host to defending national champion and No. 8 Ohio State. IU is 2-21-2 at home against the Buckeyes and hasn't beaten them since 1988. The Hoosiers did have extra time to prepare, as the team had its bye last weekend. IU coach Gerry DiNardo spent the time off looking at film and said this team is better than last year, despite the 1-6 record.

Marlins take series lead over New York

MIAMI -- Now look who's the team to beat in this World Series. Cool, confident and even a little bit cocky, the Florida Marlins are just one win from another championship, beating the banged-up and bumbling New York Yankees 6-4 in Game 5 Thursday night. Brad Penny pumped his fist like crazy when he escaped his final threat and Alex Gonzalez struck again with his Hall of Fame-bound bat as the Marlins seized a 3-2 lead with a surprisingly easy victory.

Team heads to Texas for first test of year

This weekend, the women's swimming and diving team will be traveling to Dallas, Texas, to face off in the SMU Classic. This is the first time in the five-year tenure of IU coach Doris Tierney that the swim team will head to Dallas for the competition. Tierney is prepping the team to its fullest potential for every meet, and this one is no different.

Talented freshmen serve up skills for team

Defense provides anchor for team

Four hundred thirty two minutes and two and a half weeks -- that's how long it's been since the men's soccer team has surrendered a goal. The last goal scored against the Hoosiers (7-3-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) came on Oct. 5 at Michigan. IU has been shutting down opponents at a torrid pace. As a result, it has garnered four consecutive shutouts since the streak started-- and a total of six on the season -- which has come in the midst of a five-game winning streak. The IU defense had a 0.77 goals against average in 2002, a mark that ranked 15th nationally. This season, it has been much of the same. The stifling IU defense and IU goalkeeper are allowing a mere 0.71 goals per game, a mark that ranks first in the conference. "I would characterize our team defense simply," IU coach Jerry Yeagley said. "Look at the Big Ten stats. We lead the Big Ten defensively. I've always said there are two aspects to defense -- individual and defense collectively.

Pipkens earns Big Ten honors

Among the many freshmen making contributions to the women's soccer team this season, one is already being recognized by the Big Ten for her accomplishments on and off the field. Freshman forward Megan Pipkens has made an impact wherever she has gone, having become a starter already for the Hoosiers early in the season.

Hoosiers earn split, keep tourney hope alive

The Hoosiers are still in the hunt for a spot in the Big Ten tournament after splitting their games this weekend against No. 20 Illinois and Northwestern. The Hoosiers lost to Illinois 2-1 Friday night in a hard-fought battle, but they were able to shut out Northwestern 3-0 Sunday afternoon.

IU knocks out Buckeyes at home

The IU men's soccer team was victorious over Ohio State 3-0 Sunday at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers (7-3-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) have posted four consecutive shutouts and have won five straight matches. IU's last loss came Sept. 18 at Notre Dame when it lost in double-overtime. The Hoosiers have out-scored their opponents 12-1 in the previous five games.

Sports trivia competition concludes tonight

The annual Intramural Sports Trivia Competition concludes tonight, with teams of avid fans battling to prove who really knows the most about sports. "This is a really unique sport," said Shauna Robbins, the intramural sports graduate assistant in charge of the competition. "Not many schools have this."

Wilson coaches with experience

In Judy Wilson's senior season in 1987, she was consistently one of the top finishers on a team that finished second in the NCAA regional meet held in Bowling Green, Ohio. Eleven years later, Wilson would return to Bloomington to take over the head coaching position of the IU women's cross country team.

Scholarships scarce for team

In the 2004-05 school year, Ball State University will no longer have a men's cross country or track team. The school announced it would be cutting both of these athletic programs this past summer. For many athletes, this will be the end of their collegiate athletic career and an unfortunate ending for many who are dedicated to the sport.

Athletics deficit decreases by $1.41 million in 1 year

The IU Athletic Department's deficit stands at $1.79 million, a decrease of $1.41 million from last year, according to the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act submitted to the NCAA Oct. 15. The 25 page filed report, narrowed down to 11 pages open to the public, is a compilation of data comparing men's and women's sports financial and non-financial aspects.

Yankees wait out rain to take 2-1 Series lead

MIAMI -- For the longest time, this had all the makings of another heartbreaker for Mike Mussina. Down early. Hardly any run support. A rainy night. And yet somehow, the ace who could never quite win these games won Game 3 of the World Series. Mussina outpitched young ace Josh Beckett and the New York Yankees broke it open late, beating the Florida Marlins 6-1 Tuesday night for a 2-1 edge. Derek Jeter doubled and scored the go-ahead run on Hideki Matsui's single in the eighth inning, then Bernie Williams hit his record 19th postseason homer to clinch it in the ninth. By then, Mussina's work was done. Mariano Rivera finished it off in rapid fashion, closing with two innings as the Yankees won before a crowd of 65,731 that had mostly left by the final out. Now, after their second consecutive victory, the Yankees will try to take firm hold of the Series behind Roger Clemens.

Coach discusses athletes' behavior

IU football coach Gerry DiNardo said Tuesday that three players are involved in an IU Police Department investigation into long-distance phone fraud, but he does not anticipate any student-athletes will be ineligible for Saturday's game against Ohio State. DiNardo said one of those players "involved to the highest degree (in the fraud case) was dismissed over the summer."

IU athletics turns to Ticketmaster

Judge says Bryant must stand trial

EAGLE, Colo. -- Kobe Bryant must stand trial on a charge of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old resort worker, a judge ruled Monday, clearing the way for a celebrity trial the likes of which hasn't been seen since O.J. Simpson. Eagle County Judge Frederick Gannett said prosecutors presented enough evidence Bryant might have committed the crime June 30. The Los Angeles Lakers guard could face a life sentence if convicted. His next appearance, in district court, is set for Nov. 10.
