Hoosier Hills Invitational last tune-up prior to Big Ten meet

·

With one week to prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships, IU hosts the Hoosier Hills Invitational tonight at the Gladstein Fieldhouse. Last weekend, IU traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., and competed in the Tyson Foods Invitational. IU junior sprinter Ara Towns ran her best time of the season in Fayetteville with a time of 7.41 seconds in the 60-meter run. Gophers gouge Hoosiers

·

A foul with 3.6 seconds left and two free throws by Minnesota freshman forward Kris Humphries proved to be the difference as IU lost its third-straight home game, 73-71, to the Golden Gophers (10-14, 2-10 Big Ten). Senior center George Leach was whistled for the foul after a three-point attempt by junior guard Ryan Tapak clanked off the rim. Humphries pulled down the board, and sophomore guard Bracey Wright appeared to force a jump ball, but the referee called Leach for his fifth. "We wanted one shot, just one shot," IU coach Mike Davis said. "We wanted to work the ball around until there was four seconds. We wanted to make sure when we shot the basketball, the clock was going off because the worst that could happen was overtime." IU still had a chance with 3.6 seconds left, and a deep pass found its way to sophomore Marshall Strickland. He forced an off-balance shot, and time expired.

Burns primed to join elite in mile

·

In decades past, IU's strength in track rested with the distance program. But over the last half of the 1990s, the program's luster faded, with the team finishing no higher than fifth in the Big Ten from 1993 to 1998.

Fighters not down for the count

·

Two weary boxers dance around the ring, waiting for the right moment to strike. Unfortunately, both the Michigan Wolverines and the Hoosiers have already been knocked out by their heavyweight conference opponents. While the championship belt may be out of reach, these two featherweights are trying to fight their way into the Big Ten Tournament. The Hoosiers come into the bout on the wrong end of a seven-game streak and are currently 3-10 in conference action and 10-14 overall. Michigan also has its back against the ropes with a similar 4-9 Big Ten record and 11-15 overall record.

Homestretch starts with 'U'

·

With a 12-10 overall record and a 6-5 in the Big Ten, many around Hoosier nation have begun to wonder if IU can make its 19th-straight NCAA appearance. But since the Big Ten went to a 16-game format in the 1997-98 season, every team with at least 10 conference wins has made the Tournament with the exception of ineligible Michigan last year. IU has five games remaining -- four of those at home. The first of those home games is at 8 p.m., tonight against the Minnesota Golden Gophers (9-14, 1-9 Big Ten).

Made up of only 10 competitive and five recreational members, the club's size is small by comparison with other universities, but has shown the drive and determination to compete with larger teams, said the club's founder freshman Katie Laughner.

The Hoosiers entered the UCF/Rio Pinar Invitational, the opening tournament of the spring, ranked as high as No. 19, but were unable to overcome a lackluster first day effort and finished No. 10 in a field of 18. South Alabama took first place after a playoff against host Central Florida.

DiNardo loses coordinators

·

Last season, IU finished last in the Big Ten in scoring offense and No. 10 in scoring defense. Next season, new coordinators will be in place to continue the rebuilding process as former offensive coordinator, Al Borges, and former defensive coordinator, Tim Kish, have both accepted jobs at different schools. Borges joined Tommy Tuberville's staff at Auburn, as he was named the Tigers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks' coach Friday. Kish was hired by Mike Stoops in late '03 to be the defensive line coach at Arizona.
