Artest out for rest of season

NEW YORK - Ron Artest was suspended for the rest of the season Sunday as the NBA came down hard on three members of the Indiana Pacers for fighting with fans as a game against the Detroit Pistons degenerated into a melee. Nine players from the teams were banned for a combined 143 games, including some of the harshest penalties the league has ever issued. Artest is the first player to be suspended for nearly an entire season for a fight during a game.

Manning lighting up league with TDs

INDIANAPOLIS -- If Peyton Manning has proved anything this season, it is that nothing is out of reach. He's already thrown five touchdowns in an NFL-record three games this season. He's thrown at least three TD passes six times and is on pace to shatter Dan Marino's seemingly untouchable single-season record of 48 TD passes.

Owners delay Expos vote

CHICAGO -- Major League Baseball owners surprisingly did not vote Thursday on the proposed move of the Montreal Expos to Washington D.C. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig said he still expected the move to take place, and said owners will vote on the deal by Dec. 6.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Lou Holtz will retire as coach at South Carolina after the season, The Associated Press learned Thursday night, apparently paving the way for Steve Spurrier to replace him. Holtz told his team before Thursday's practice that he was retiring, according to a source close to the program who spoke on condition of anonymity. All season, the 67-year-old Holtz said he was worn out and tired, and even said Spurrier would be a good choice to succeed him.

Hoosiers welcome Kentucky, Utah for Invitational After dropping one spot in the national polls, the No. 14-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing loss by participating in the ninth annual Indiana Invitational. The Invitational, which will take place at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center from today through Sunday, is a 10-team competition.

2 teams, 1 great rivalry

Veteran defenders expected to lead team

NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds won his record seventh NL MVP award in a walk. Capping a season filled with suspicion and success, the San Francisco Giants left fielder became the oldest player to become the MVP of a major North American professional league. The 40-year-old received 24 of 32 first-place votes and 407 points Monday in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America to earn the award for the fourth straight season.

Computers keep Oklahoma No. 2 in BCS poll

Hoosiers plagued by costly penalties

During Saturday's game against Penn State, IU was on the wrong end of eight penalties. The Hoosiers have been plagued with penalties all season long, as they racked up 15 total flags in the last two games alone.

IU upset in conference tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The inability to finish games is something that plagued the IU men's basketball team last season and the IU football team this season. That inability trickled down to the No. 4 IU men's soccer team (14-4-1, 5-1 Big Ten) this season and finally caught up to the team in the Hoosiers' 2-1 loss Friday to Michigan State (11-6-4, 2-4-0 Big Ten) in the Big Ten tournament.

Team outdone by ranked Illini in straight sets

Hoping to bounce back from a tough loss against Purdue last week, the IU women's volleyball team played host to Illinois Friday night at University Gymnasium. The Hoosiers fell behind quickly against the Illini and never bounced back, losing in straight sets, 20-30, 18-30, 22-30. IU came out looking tired after the emotionally draining five-set loss to the Boilermakers Wednesday.

Goal-line plunge eludes IU offense

Two minutes left, first down, one yard to go. Trailing by a mere six points, the Hoosiers were knocking on Penn State's door with a chance to beat the Nittany Lions for the first time in 10 tries. In a scenario that has become all too familiar for IU this season, the Hoosiers were unable to punch the ball in the end zone in four straight running plays, and gave the Hoosiers their seventh loss of the season.
