Dueling for victories

·

It was a long, strenuous weekend for the IU men's swimming and diving team. After a sweep at the hands of Texas the weekend prior, the Hoosiers knew the next couple of meets could help separate them from the pack. The No. 13 ranked Hoosiers first met the No. 14 ranked Northwestern Wildcats Friday in the team's first dual meet against a conference opponent. Both teams fought a hard battle and the meet proved as close as the two teams' rankings would suggest.

Late collapse ends bowl dreams

·

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Late in the third quarter with the Hoosiers driving downfield, senior quarterback Matt LoVecchio ran for a first down, putting IU in the red zone and in position to increase its lead. Instead of getting up, LoVecchio laid dazed and confused on the turf, the same emotions the team felt after letting another fourth quarter lead and any hopes of a bowl bid slip away in a 26-22 loss to Illinois Saturday afternoon.

Not far from the tree

Like father, like son. For many young boys, there is the inherent dream to be like their fathers, if only for a short while. The picture is common and crystal clear: A young boy suits up in his father's attire and pictures himself following in his footsteps. Sophomore lineman Justin Frye and senior long snapper Kyle Warriner's childhood aspirations took a similar path; however, their fathers' footsteps were formed by pairs of football cleats.

The IU women's field hockey team is set to take on Michigan State at this weekend's Big Ten tournament. IU has yet to win a conference tournament game, but the Hoosiers are coming off their best season since the program restarted in 2000. The team's 12 wins are the most in school history. "The fact that we've played Michigan State recently gives us an advantage," said IU coach Amy Roberston. "We should be able to make some adjustments and play well."

Champaign wishes or victory dreams?

·

The last time the Hoosiers came off a win against a Top 25 team they followed it up with a bad loss against the University of Kentucky, which started a five-game losing streak. IU hopes to avoid another letdown after a 30-21 victory against then-No. 24 Minnesota when the Hoosiers travel to Champaign, Ill., to play the Fighting Illini 2 p.m Saturday at Illinois' Memorial Stadium.

The stat books will mark Wednesday night's men's soccer game as senior goalkeeper Jay Nolly's eighth shutout of the season, but the reality is that he barely even needed to show up. Rookie Sanders gets stops, passing marks after replacing Doss

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bob Sanders never doubted his skills. All he wanted was a chance to show how he could play. In Sunday's 45-35 loss at Kansas City, Sanders earned his biggest opportunity of the season when he replaced the injured Mike Doss.
