Hoosiers off to flawless beginning

The IU field hockey team emerged from its road trip to the Northeast with two victories, opening the season 2-0. The Hoosiers defeated New Hampshire Saturday 3-1 to kickoff the season. Seniors Kayla Bashore and Nikki Orciuch tallied goals for the Hoosiers, with a third goal coming from junior Lydia Schrott.

IU splits first 2 games in Credit Union Invitational

For 13 years, one thing has remained constant with IU women's volleyball -- the first win of the season. IU head coach Katie Weismiller improved her record of leading the Hoosiers on opening day to 13-0 Saturday when her team knocked off Indiana State. The Hoosiers ending up splitting their weekend series, beating the Sycamores in straight sets (30-24, 30-14, 30-18) before falling to tournament champion Western Kentucky in a five-set loss (28-30, 30-24, 23-30, 30-19, 9-15) during the nightcap of the IU Credit Union Invitational.

Bears agree to terms with Benson

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Running back Cedric Benson ended his 36-day holdout Sunday night, agreeing to a five-year contract with the Chicago Bears. Benson, the No. 4 overall pick in this year's draft, was the last remaining first-round pick to sign. Terms were not available but reports said the Bears had offered a contract that contained $17 million in guaranteed money to the former Texas star.

Recruit Rush passes on Hoosiers for Jayhawks

High school standout Brandon Rush has officially chosen the University of Kansas instead of IU or Illinois, but he isn't officially a member of the Kansas basketball team yet. The 6-foot-6 guard enrolled at Kansas after a 10-day recruiting venture that saw him visit IU, Illinois and Kansas.

IU goes scoreless in losses

The IU women's soccer team began its 2005 season this weekend in California, but its offense failed to start the season's scoring, posting no goals in two games. The Hoosiers took on tournament host University of Southern California yesterday, falling 6-0 to the No. 18-ranked Women of Troy. Two days earlier, IU and Loyola Marymount University played to a scoreless tie, finishing 110 minutes of soccer at 0-0. After two games the Hoosiers stand at 0-1-1 for the season.

DiNardo, Holtz take jobs with ESPN, won't be able to vote in new BCS poll

NEW YORK -- Former coaches Lou Holtz of Notre Dame and Gerry DiNardo of Indiana will not be able to vote on the new college football poll being used by the Bowl Championship Series because they now work for ESPN.

In March 1999, during a regional game between No. 1 ranked Bloomington High School South and No. 2 ranked Lawrence North High School, John Stewart took a seat on the bench feeling short of breath. Then his eyes rolled back in his head. A few short moments, the standout Indianapolis senior and Kentucky basketball recruit was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead from heart failure.

Expectations run high for Hoosiers after winningest season on record

Hoosiers begin 2005 season with swing through West Coast

INDIANAPOLIS - James Jones has left the Indiana Pacers and completed a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Suns Thursday, Suns president Bryan Colangelo said. Jones' new deal is for four years, with the fourth year at the player's option. Financial terms were not disclosed. The Suns sent the Pacers a second-round draft pick in 2008 in exchange for the 24-year-old Jones, who was a restricted free agent.

Police still searching for former baseball star

TAMPA, Fla. - Police talked to relatives and acquaintances of Dwight Gooden for a third day in a row in their effort to find and arrest the former baseball star, who fled after being pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving.

NCAA adds extra year to South Carolina's probation

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The NCAA added an extra year to South Carolina's self-imposed two years' probation, but did not impose sanctions on TV or postseason appearances for 10 violations that occurred during the tenure of retired football coach Lou Holtz.

Tour director: Armstrong 'fooled' the sports world

PARIS - Sounding convinced that Lance Armstrong is guilty of doping, the director of the Tour de France said "we were all fooled" and the seven-time champion owes an explanation for "proven scientific facts" from a newspaper report alleging he cheated to win cycling's most prestigious event. Jean-Marie Leblanc's comments appeared in the French sports daily L'Equipe Wednesday, a day after the newspaper reported that six urine samples provided by Armstrong during the '99 Tour tested positive for the red blood cell-booster EPO.

Turkish center picks Hoosiers instead of Tar Heels, Gators

The IU basketball community was finally able to stop holding its breath Wednesday regarding prep star Brandon Rush -- even if only to say "who?" Turkish standout Cem Dinc made his own recruiting waves Thursday when he expressed interest in attending IU this year. The 6-foot-10, 255-pound center cancelled visits to the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina after spending the early part of the week in Bloomington.

Turkish star recruit joins IU

After meeting with IU coaches Tuesday, Turkish National Team star Cem Dinc announced he intends to join the Hoosiers next season. The 6-foot-10, 240-pound player cancelled visits planned with Florida and North Carolina for later this week after visiting with team representatives. IU head coach Mike Davis played for Dinc's national coach while playing professionally in Italy. Dinc is also scheduled to play for Turkey in the World Championship games before the college season starts.

Top overall draft pick will be on 49ers' bench

Alex Smith will begin his first NFL season on the San Francisco bench. After struggling in both of his preseason starts, Smith was told Tuesday by coach Mike Nolan that Tim Rattay will open the season at quarterback against St. Louis. "I know how this works," said Smith, the top overall pick in this year's draft. "This is a team game. This isn't all about me. I think the team wants to win now. We expect to win now, and as of right now, this looks like the right decision.
