Hoosiers hoping to avoid letdown against Valparaiso tonight at home

·

It should be a hero's return for the team that IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack calls the "11-headed monster." The IU women's basketball team returns home tonight after its 54-51 victory over the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats on Sunday. The Hoosiers (2-0) will try to defend their home court tonight against the Crusaders of Valparaiso (0-1) at 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall.

Big Ten weekend with the boys of IU

·

I was totally focused on beating the Penn State Nittany Lions in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament last Friday. They had defeated us three times in a row, and we were out for revenge. Beating them would end their season, and that would be almost as satisfying as winning the Big Ten Tournament.

2 Hoosiers reach semifinals in Singles Championships

·

IU senior David Bubenicek fell in the finals, but junior Dara McLoughlin advanced to the semifinals of the men's tennis Big Ten Singles Championship, hosted by Michigan. The host team's player, Matko Maravic, defeated McLoughlin in the semifinals 6-1, 6-2 and then prevailed against Bubenicek 6-3, 6-2 to take home the championship Monday.

Sampson gets 1st regular season win at IU

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Kelvin Sampson had been waiting since March for this night. It finally came, and while the story didn't play out as well as the first-year IU coach might have hoped, the final result did.

IU slips past Lafayette College 91-66

The IU men's basketball team went on a 29-5 run late in the second half of Monday night's game to secure a 91-66 victory against the Lafayette College Leopards. The matchup marked the Hoosiers' first win of the regular season, and the first of IU coach Kelvin Sampson's career.

Chargers win high-scoring shootout against Bengals 49-41

·

CINCINNATI -- LaDainian Tomlinson tied his career high with four touchdowns, and Philip Rivers threw a touchdown pass under pressure that completed the Chargers' furious rally Sunday for a 49-41 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Colts make history with 9th win

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Just call him Patient Peyton. With Buffalo content to slow down the Indianapolis Colts' up-tempo offense, a restrained Peyton Manning relied on short throws, an effective ground game and a time-consuming final drive to lead the Indianapolis Colts past Buffalo 17-16 on Sunday -- and into the NFL record book.

Freshman takes 3rd at regionals, earns NCAA bid

·

After Saturday's Great Lakes Regional Championships at Bowling Green State University, it became clear that a new leader had emerged in the IU men's cross country pack. Freshman Jordan Kyle took third at the regional meet, earning a spot at the NCAA Championships.

Hoosier duo qualifies for nationals race

·

There's a saying that goes, "You always need to take the positives out of the negatives." This sentiment applied to the IU women's cross country team's performance Saturday.

IU shifts focus to Saturday's game

·

It was almost like Saturday's game at Memorial Stadium didn't even matter. Shortly after the loss to No. 2 Michigan, IU senior center Justin Frye was already counting down to the season finale against in-state rival Purdue.

Defense looks top-notch

·

Both IU men's basketball exhibition games are in the books. Both were blowouts. Both featured a work-in-progress D.J. White and a surprisingly solid Armon Bassett, the backup/counterpart to Earl Calloway. Both displayed the sharp-shooting of junior college transfer Lance Stemler. But what stood out above all else at this early-season juncture was the stifling, hard-nosed defense. Just ask University of Indianapolis coach Todd Sturgeon.

IU wins final exhibition game

·

The IU men's basketball team defeated the University of Indianapolis 83-46 Friday night at Assembly Hall in its second and final exhibition game of the season. Junior forward D.J. White paced the Hoosiers with 17 points and five rebounds and went 11-for-14 from the free throw line.

Hoosiers take a dive at 5

·

Freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis didn't have much time to do anything in Saturday's game against Michigan. The No. 2 team in the country, with the No. 3 overall defense, never allowed Lewis and the Hoosiers to get into a rhythm in the air or on the ground as IU fell 34-3 to the Wolverines.
