COLUMBUS, Ohio – During their years at IU, former Hoosier standout soccer players Danny O’Rourke, Jed Zayner and Ned Grabavoy received their A’s in “Soccer 101.” Now, all three players have reached the next level as professional players for MLS’s Columbus Crew.

Junior grabs first individual tourney victory

Many athletes dream about success at whatever they do. IU junior Elaine Harris said last week she was hoping to follow in former IU golfer Shannon Johnson’s footsteps. Chalk that up as a success. Seven days after scoring her first Big Ten golfer of the week honor, Harris scored her first career individual tournament title at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.

2006 champ ATO fails to qualify for Little 500

Though the fields for the men’s and women’s Little 500 were set Saturday, the biggest story of the day was who didn’t make the race. Defending men’s champion Alpha Tau Omega failed to make the field for the 57th men’s Little 500 after faulting on all three qualification attempts.

IU coach Barry King and the IU women’s water polo team were confident they were going to be the best team in the pool for their six road contests throughout Pennsylvania this weekend. And the results certainly backed up their swagger heading into the weekend.

IUSF lifts ban on coach

Fourteen months after receiving a lifetime ban from the Little 500, Team Major Taylor coach Courtney Bishop has been reinstated by the IU Student Foundation. “It’s great to be back,” Bishop said. “I’ve been shocked before, so the decision is what the decision is.” IUSF Director Jenny Bruffey said the foundation lifted Bishop’s ban Friday, the same day the organization reversed a rule that banned alumni from coaching in the pits during the race.

Hoosiers split matches with ranked Big Ten foes

The IU men’s tennis team stands at 1-2 in the Big Ten after splitting a pair of matches this weekend. The Hoosiers (11-7) fell to No. 23 Minnesota on Saturday 5-2, but they stormed back with a 6-1 win against Iowa on Sunday.

IU recruit Gordon, North Central fall short in state finals

INDIANAPOLIS – It took 30 seconds for IU recruit and Indianapolis North Central star guard Eric Gordon to show how good he was in Saturday night’s Indiana Boys Basketball 4A state final. Then, not long afterward, East Chicago Central showed it took more than Eric Gordon to win a state championship.

Growing up in Indianapolis, freshman Ryan Weisberger wanted to participate in the Little 500. The Phi Gamma Delta rookie will get his first taste of the competition this Saturday at qualifications.

IU's tournament run ends with loss at South Dakota State

On Monday, IU women’s basketball coach Felisha Legette-Jack referred to her team as the sensational seven. But on Thursday night, seven dressed players were not enough for the Hoosiers, as they fell to South Dakota State in the third round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament 60-53 in front of a sold-out crowd in Brookings, S.D.

What a difference one tournament can make. After a record-setting day at the UNLV Spring Invitational, the IU women’s golf team is brimming with confidence. “We have great momentum” after last week, IU coach Clint Wallman said.

Returning from spring break, many students will begin to notice more and more white Schwinn bicycles racing through campus, classmates sporting noticeable tan lines from wearing spandex, and some of their peers covering up nasty scars from crashes.

IU hosts IPFW for 3-game stretch

As March rolls to an end, the IU baseball team is beginning to pick up steam. The Hoosiers are riding a four-game win streak it will take into a three-game series against IPFW this weekend. IU will play an IPFW team that is only 4-16 on the year but has won their last two games, scoring a total of 20 runs in the two-game stretch.

In the months after the end to their regular season, the IU men’s soccer team has only seen familiar faces on the opposing team bench – their own.
