A second-inning explosion helped the IU baseball team get a 14-4 victory over DePauw Thursday at Sembower Field. The victory was sparked by seven runs scored in the second inning. The offensive attack was led by senior first baseman Gibran Hamdan. Hamdan, who started the second-inning attack with a single, was 4-for-5 for the Hoosiers (5-3) and added a home run in the fourth inning. By the end of the game, Hamdan batted in three runs and scored three of his own.

Healing Hoosiers face trio of matches

The IU men's tennis team's next three matches are against highly ranked teams, but IU welcomes the challenge. The Hoosiers (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten) play a trio of matches over spring break. These matches are against Clemson, South Alabama and Kentucky. The Hoosiers play in Mobile, Ala., at the University of South Alabama Invitational versus the Tigers (7-4) Sunday and against the host Jaguars (7-5) Tuesday.

Hoosiers rained on again, games delayed

In the first day of their three-day road trip to Fresno, Cal., the IU softball team faced opposition they have seen all year: Rain. Eight of the Hoosiers first thirteen scheduled games were canceled because of wet weather conditions.

Hoosiers struggle despite efforts of Davidson, Peters

Two IU players finished in the top ten at the Emerald Coast Collegiate at Tiger Point Golf & Country Club in Pensacola, Fla. However, the individual efforts of junior Ben Davidson and freshman Heath Peters were not enough to prevent IU from finishing seventh in the 11-team tournament.

The pressure's on as postseason begins

It's crunch time for the Hoosiers and they know it. They begin their post-season starting with the Big Ten Championships this weekend in Champaign, Ill. The event will be held March 9-10 at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers know they have to perform well in order to continue their seasons. Only the top four places in each weight class advance to the National Championships March 21-23.

Team hopes to play after cancellations

Looking to improve on its 1-3-1 record in the young spring season, the IU softball team is heading to Fresno, Calif., to play six games in three days at the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic hosted by Fresno State.

IU gingerly prepares for postseason due to injuries

With Jared Jeffries' ankle slowly on the mend and Tom Coverdale's back spasms gradually cooperating, IU prepared for the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday. The nagging injuries to IU's top two scorers forced the Hoosiers to do so lightly.

Late-inning charge leads to win

Sophomore left fielder Mark Calkins' three-run home run in the eighth inning capped a dramatic come-from-behind victory as the Hoosiers downed Xavier 10-9 in a slugfest Tuesday.

Women's golf finishes tourney

After posting both season-high and season-low rounds during its spring tournament, the women's golf team played more consistently Monday and Tuesday at the "Mo" memorial in Houston, Texas. But that consistency didn't mean the Hoosiers played well. They shot rounds of 323 and 319 to finish in sixth place.

Freshman Sharna Nelson's first experience with snow was not a good one. Having never seen snow before, Nelson didn't know what to expect. She knew it was soft on top but didn't realize it is was so soft underneath.

Iowa needs wins

Disappointment has run high at Iowa, where the Hawkeyes started the season by playing well enough to be ranked in the top 10 nationally. After the hot start the Hawkeyes folded in Big Ten play, stumbling to a disappointing record in Steve Alford's third year as head coach.

Hoosiers earn automatic NCAA bid after Penn State upset

INDIANAPOLIS -- Before the beginning of the Big Ten women's basketball tournament Thursday, the Hoosiers postseason future was already determined -- there wasn't one. But a run to the tournament's championship game -- the first time in the school's history and the first No. 5 seed to do so -- and a win against No. 1 Purdue in the semifinal and a three-point win versus No. 2 Penn State in the championship changes the plans.

Big Ten debates continue ...

The fuss over the Big Ten Player of the Year keeps brewing. The Big Ten will announce its awards today -- All-Big Ten teams and individual honors -- but coaches let their thoughts fly Monday. Illinois' Bill Self touted junior guard Frank Williams. Michigan State's Tom Izzo flaunted sophomore guard Marcus Taylor. IU's Mike Davis boasted about sophomore forward Jared Jeffries.

Hoosiers shock No. 7 Boilermakers

INDIANAPOLIS -- Point guard Heather Cassady and center Jill Chapman had never beaten Purdue. That is, until Sunday, when the two seniors refused to allow the ugly blemish of a 0-8 record against their ultra-respected, in-state rival to remain on their college resumes.

Team plays waiting game

Most students were watching the IU men's basketball team claim a share of the Big Ten title, the men's track and field team was competing for the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The team sent four athletes to Iowa State and six to Notre Dame. There were several provisional marks met and many personal records set at the two meets.

Hoosiers fall short of national title

It was supposed to be the IU hockey team's year. This year's Hoosiers had everything: speed, depth, goaltending and special teams. And they had experience in the form of nine seniors. If any group had the chance to win an American Collegiate Hockey Association National Championship, this was the one.

Women split weekend matches

The women's tennis team returned to Bloomington after splitting its two away matches this weekend. After opening the weekend with a win at Illinois State, the Hoosiers dropped their Big Ten opener in a close match to Iowa, 4-3.

Hoosiers start Big Ten season with a defeat

The IU men's tennis team looked forward to the challenge Northwestern would present in the conference opener. The challenge would take the form of a 5-2 loss against the Wildcats Saturday. The Hoosiers (6-4, 0-1 Big Ten) opened up their four-game road trip with a difficult setback at Northwestern (9-3, 4-0).
