Hoosiers slip on national television

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Before the football team headed to Wolfpack territory, coach Cam Cameron and his players promised a "statement" would be made. But before a sold out crowd of 51,500 Thursday at North Carolina State, the statement of an "improved team" was instead replaced by painful plays that bore strong resemblance to last season.

Honegger to be released from jail after 1 month

Former women's basketball player Rachael Honegger has been sitting in a jail cell for the past month. The 23-year-old senior, a former starting forward, will see daylight today. She had been in custody pending a court date on a charge of violating the terms of her house arrest.

All about defense

This game was probably more to the liking of Coach Mike Davis than last Saturday's blowout win against No. 12 Illinois. More defense and less talk about shooting. A smothering defense and a balanced offense led by Jared Jeffries was the story for the Hoosiers as they coasted to a 66-52 win against in-state rival Purdue before 17,456 fans at Assembly Hall. Jeffries finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Tom Coverdale had nine and Kyle Hornsby and A.J. Moye each had six.

Expectations met in win

The IU men's track and field team put together a dominating performance across the board and handed Michigan a lopsided 100-59 loss Saturday. The meet, held at the Gladstein fieldhouse, was the first of the season for IU. The Hoosiers produced many strong performances.

Exchanges key to success

The cinder track at Bill Armstrong Stadium is not forgiving -- not to the riders who crash on it and not to the teams who lose time as a result. So it comes as no surprise that many teams put a high premium on smooth bike exchanges from one teammate to another in hopes of avoiding such misfortune. So much was evident Saturday at the women's Little 500 qualifications, where none of the 30 teams risked missing the 33-team cut but all teams had to finish the four-lap time trial without any fouls from faulty exchanges. By the time the event ended, many teams needed multiple attempts to accomplish the task, including women's pole setter Kappa Kappa Gamma, which took first on its third attempt. Kappa Kappa Gamma was first called for stepping in the gutter and then for touching the bike before it crossed the line. By the time the team raced its third attempt in the afternoon, it knew it had to get exchanges down.

BIG TEN CHAMPS

Nine minutes into the men's basketball game against Northwestern Saturday, IU coach Mike Davis wasn't worried about his Hoosiers starting the game 2 of 10 from the field or a 17-6 deficit staring them in the face. He was worried about hats. With a share of the Big Ten championship on the line -- commemorative hats and T-shirts and the shiny, gold trophy awaiting an IU victory -- the Hoosiers struggled out of the gate. But they rebounded to beat Northwestern 79-67.

Men's track and field team to play host to first scored meet of season

With the past two weekends going unscored as a team, the men's track and field team will play host to its first meet for points at home 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the E.C. Billy Hayes Track. The Hoosiers will face Cinncinati, Ball State, Central Michigan and Iowa in a five-way match.

Men's soccer team falls short in NCAA title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In today's NCAA College Cup Championship game, the No. 7 University of North Carolina Tar Heels (20-4) upset No. 4 IU (17-4-1) 2-0 at Columbus Crew Stadium. Both teams won emotional semifinal matches on Friday night to battle for the National Championship. UNC, after scoring two goals in 64 seconds to tie No.4 Stanford, won in four overtimes. The Hoosiers followed with a 2-1 double overtime win against No.8 St.John's.

IU has 'strong showing' at diving competition

The IU women's divers successfully returned to competition in the Indiana Winter Invitational and Dive-Off after five days of intensive training over the semester break. The Hoosiers played host to Iowa State and Purdue for three days of diving to start off the spring championship season. In the three-meter events on Friday, IU junior Sara Reiling and Boilermaker senior Kara Hajek-Gustafson battled it out throughout the day. Hajek-Gustafson edged out Reiling by three points with a total of 518.40 in the collegiate event. Reiling's second place finish led a string of Hoosiers who placed second through seventh. Senior Erin Quinn finished third with a total of 493.90, while juniors Jennifer Sonneborn and Crystal Gregory rounded out the top five.

Youth looking to lead team in match against Cardinals

IU men's tennis (2-1) could use a victory after a disappointing loss at Louisville. The Hoosiers welcome Ball State (2-1) to the Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Ball St. also lost its last match, falling to No. 6 Illinois. IU holds a remarkable 34-7 all-time record versus in-state rivals. The Hoosiers next four matches will be at home. The home matches are an opportunity to acquire some momentum before conference play begins Feb. 23. "It's real important. We shouldn't lose matches at home," senior Rahman Smiley said. "Away matches are tougher to win." Smiley and senior Milan Rakvica are leading the Hoosiers this season. Smiley is undefeated in both spring singles and doubles matches. He boasts a 9-5 overall singles record and a 7-1 doubles mark this year. Rakvica is 8-5 in overall singles and 6-1 in doubles.

Defense rules the day in spring scrimmage

In the IU football team's scrimmage Saturday at Memorial Stadium, the defense dominated the offense. Yes, the same defense that has been scrutinized, criticized and demoralized in recent years completely controlled the offense in the team's first full-contact scrimmage of the spring practice schedule. With both sides of the ball split up into two teams, the Hoosier offense dealt with interceptions, dropped snaps, missed field-goal attempts and downfield fumbles leading to only two scores during the two-hour scrimmage.

Teams have one last chance to compete, bring members together, before big race

This is the last weekend before Little 500, and the teams get one last chance to test their skills in preparation for the final race. The last series event, Team Pursuit, has teams squaring off against each other to snag the two fastest times. The two top times face off in the final round to determine the winners.

Hoosiers get ready for No. 1 Duke

Make no mistake, the Hoosiers know what they are up against Thursday night when they face No. 1 Duke in the South Regional semifinals at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. They will be playing the best team in their region and the Tournament and probably the nation. And after Blue Devils' guard Jason Williams was named the Naismith Player of the Year Monday, IU will be facing the best player in the nation on the best team.

SHOWDOWN for the CROWN

Not many people -- experts, coaches, players -- thought a late-February battle between Ohio State and IU could settle the Big Ten title. A lot of those people -- those who picked Illinois and Iowa to win the conference -- were wrong. But when the dust settles tonight at Assembly Hall, either the No. 19 Buckeyes or the No. 23 Hoosiers will be in sole possession of first place and prime position to claim the Big Ten title.

Final 4 Destination

Behind two second-half goals by junior forward Pat Noonan, the men's soccer team beat the No.5 Clemson Tigers 2-0 Sunday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The win put the No.4 Hoosiers (17-3-1) in the College Cup, the Final Four of college soccer, for the fifth straight year. Virginia is the only other school to have ever strung together five consecutive College Cups, achieving the feat through the 1991-1995 seasons.

Hoosiers turn to defense in battle with Buckeyes

The women's basketball team continues to apply the Big Ten's best defense like troublesome super glue. Believe it or not, the Hoosiers (9-11, 3-6 Big Ten) hold opponents to a league-best 63.9 points per game. But in a 75-60 loss to No. 22 Minnesota Sunday, the ever-steadfast pressure vanished in the final four minutes. The Hoosiers relinquished 49 points in the second half after tying the game 26-26 at halftime.
