Twins down Athletics in playoff opener

·

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Minnesota Twins shook off a serious case of the playoff jitters in plenty of time. A.J. Pierzynski had four hits, and Corey Koskie homered and drove in three runs as the Twins overcame an early deficit and a series of fielding blunders to beat the Oakland Athletics 7-5 Tuesday in the first game of the AL division series. In their first postseason appearance since winning the World Series in 1991, the Twins made three errors in the first two innings and fell behind 5-1 to A's ace Tim Hudson.

Vikings should cut ties with Moss

·

The year was 1998. One of the loudest names in the draft was a lanky receiver out of Marshall named Randy Moss. Moss's skills should have placed him in the top ten, but that "off-field distraction" title was worrisome -- too big of a chance to take for 20 teams. The Minnesota Vikings decided, though, that Moss was too good to pass up, and they took their chances. Moss's personality was too much for Bobby Bowden and the Florida State Seminoles. Much of Moss's collegiate career was played in the darkness of West Virginia because of his problematic reputation drove him away from the public spotlight.

Hoosiers to face Louisville

·

IU's struggling field hockey team will take to the field again tonight for a match-up with another top-notch opponent. The Hoosiers visit No. 11 Louisville at 7:30 p.m. in Tragger Stadium. IU is coming off of a tough weekend road trip in which they dropped both of their games. The team fell to the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday and were overpowered by Penn State squad, 6-1, on Sunday.

Depth key as men's cross country team positions for Big 10 title run

·

Cross country coaches routinely stress that a team is only as strong as its fifth man. With the depth sophomore Kurtis George provides, the Hoosiers are positioning themselves for a Big Ten title run. In the early part of the season, the team has used a strong pack to lead them to commanding victories. George made his presence felt in the pack.

Sophomore golfer hears hype

·

Even though the Hoosiers were not overly successful as a whole this weekend at the Northern Intercollegiate, a few individuals brought light to the tournament. Playing on their home course, one that coach Mike Mayer said does not yield many low scores, the team's experience was evident. The team tied for fifth place, shooting an 860.

Road-racing legends dream up American F-1 team

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- U.S. interest in Formula One racing has never been up to par with the interest in NASCAR or Indy car racing. But plans may be in the works to turn the tide in favor of Formula One. At least that's what U.S. road-racing legends Dan Gurney and Phil Hill are hoping for as they plan to start up an American Formula One team next season.

Hoosiers beat Buckeyes 3-1

·

The IU women's soccer team began its Big Ten schedule this weekend by going 1-1 on the road. Penn State defeated the Hoosiers in Happy Valley 3-0 on Friday, but IU rebounded with a 3-1 defeat of Ohio State Sunday. "Today the team earned an 'A' grade and an 'A' effort," coach Mick Lyon said in a statement after the win over Ohio State. "In talking to many of the coaches in the conference, the difference between the top teams and the teams in the middle of the pack is who finishes their chances. Today we really finished on our chances. Today was another step forward in the development of the program."

Grabavoy nets penalty kick to down Penn State

·

Penn State came within 5:44 of breaking IU's 31 game winning streak in Big Ten play Friday night in University Park, Penn. But the No. 5 Hoosiers prevailed with a 1-0 double overtime victory over the No. 12 ranked Nittany Lions. The victory was the Hoosiers' tenth straight victory over conference rival Penn State and extended IU's winning streak to 32 straight conference games. IU has now played two of its three conference road games, picking up wins over two other favorites to challenge the Hoosiers for the Big Ten regular season championship.

Undefeated Nittany Lions live up to their legacy

·

The Hoosiers were riding high after six straight wins, unprecedented individual statistics and two straight wins against ranked opponents. But, the No. 9 Penn State Nittany Lions were just too much, and the Hoosiers lost 3-0 and fell to 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Penn State was no easy task for the Hoosiers, as the nationally ranked Nittany Lions have only lost five home matches since 1995 and are only three years removed from a national title. Bolstered by 2,003-person strong Penn State crowd, the Nittany Lions always kept the Hoosiers playing catch-up. While PSU managed to keep the Hoosiers down, they maintained respect for IU's play.

Around the game

·

Coming into the Roy Griak Invitation at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course, the women's cross-country team had finished first and second respectively in their first two meets of the season. After the results were added up Saturday afternoon, the Hoosiers finished fifth out of 22 teams with a score of 153. IU finished just four points behind Marquette. Michigan State, Arizona State and Providence College took the top three spots.

Team takes second place

·

Two weeks ago the Hoosiers got off to a big lead in the Wolverine Invitational and were able to hold on to that lead and win the tourney. Unfortunately, this weekend IU stormed out to a large lead and was unable to hold off the competition. The team finished in a second place tie at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate in Iowa City, Iowa. Coach Sam Carmichael said the team's poor play in the final round cost them the title. "We played as bad today as we did good yesterday," he said. "We started out poor, I think we only had one player break 40 on the front nine. We played well on the back, but just dug ourselves too deep on the front and weren't able to overcome that. Kent State played very well today to win." Going in to the final round of the tournament, IU held a seven stroke lead, but Kent State shot a final round 299 to IU's final round 309, and overtook the Hoosiers for the title. Junior Karen Dennison, the No. 1 ranked golfer, according to Golf Week/Sagarin ratings, started the final round with a one stroke lead, but shot a 78 and placed second. Dennison finished one-under par, 218, for the tournament, a career best, eclipsing the mark she set two weeks ago at the Wolverine Invitational, where she won the individual title.

Team battles back after weather postpones play

·

First came the rain, then came the fog, and then came the self-unraveling. After the massive downpour Thursday night, the entire outlook of this past weekend's Northern Intercollegiate was altered. As the players awoke Saturday morning, a thick blanket of fog had settled in overnight, which postponed play until 10 am. When play finally began, the Hoosiers came out lackluster during the first round. Fortunately, for the Hoosiers at least, the lifeless performance lasted for only one round. The team went on to regain its composure and take fifth place alongside Ohio State for the weekend.

Race kicks off cycling series

·

Cyclocross, the first event of the Little 500 Fall Cycling series, took riders over bales of hay, up and down stadium stairs and around parts of Bill Armstrong stadium Saturday. Cyclocross is an event aimed at raising awareness about Little 500. Riders risk injury for a chance to win a $250 scholarship. The two male teams are required to switch riders after every lap and are penalized if they don't complete an obstacle correctly. The women's race, which featured six teams, ultimately saw the Roadrunners win with ease. The Roadrunners team of seniors Jenn Wangerin and Katie Zeller cruised to the finish line in 24 minutes and 19 seconds, more than a minute ahead of their closest competition.

U.S. Grand Prix ending raises eyebrows

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- Controversy struck again on race day in Indianapolis as Ferrari dominated the United States Grand Prix, with their drivers, Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and German Michael Schumacher, finishing 1-2, respectively. Unlike this year's Indianapolis 500, when controversy swirled over who won the race, this time questions were raised regarding the tactics used between the Ferrari drivers that allowed Barrichello to come out on top. Ferrari's prancing horse controlled the Grand Prix from beginning to end as Barrichello and Schumacher led every lap of the race. Schumacher led after all but five of the 73 laps, including by 2.743 seconds with just two laps remaining. It was then that Schumacher began to slow down to allow Barrichello to close the gap.

Lack of running game grounds Hoosier offense

·

For once, it wasn't the turnovers or missed scoring opportunities that hurt the Hoosiers. Instead it was the running game that went nowhere on Saturday in a 45-17 loss to Ohio State. Coach Gerry DiNardo had stressed to the team all week that the team that could run the ball efficiently and stop the run on defense would have the advantage. The Hoosiers weren't able to do either. Freshman running back Yamar Washington had averaged 149 yards in his previous two games, but he was held in check by the Ohio State defense and gained only 15 yards on 10 carries.

Ohio State squashes Hoosiers

·

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- No. 6 Ohio State ripped apart a close game by outscoring IU 17-0 in the third quarter en route to a 45-17 win in front of a crowd of 104,194 Saturday. Ohio State freshman running back Maurice Clarett scored three touchdowns to add to his Big Ten leading total of nine for the season. "He's a good back," said freshman linebacker John Kerr, who also played against Clarett in high school. "He's powerful, and he's quick."
