There's one thing that won't be getting in the way of a good season for the men's basketball team: team chemistry. "Last year you could see it on the court," freshman guard Roderick Wilmont said. "Everybody wanted to be the superstar and shot the ball. This year everybody has to do their part."

Winning on the road in the Big Ten isn't easy. IU learned that lesson first hand last season. The Hoosiers lost seven of eight Big Ten road games last season to finish out the conference season 8-8.

I hope there is someone on campus with interest in putting a DeLorean up for sale, preferably one with a working flux capacitor. With the recruiting class that will be arriving in Bloomington next year, it would be much more convenient for me to skip over this year and watch the most highly touted IU team in a very long time.

BCS rankings don't bother USC

LOS ANGELES -- Southern California coach Pete Carroll has no complaint about his team's BCS ranking, although he would prefer a different system to determine college football's national champion. Despite beating Arizona 45-0 last weekend, the Trojans dropped to third in the BCS rankings and, for the moment, out of the national title picture.

Bonds wins 6th MVP, 3rd straight

NEW YORK -- This one was for Dad. Barry Bonds won a record sixth National League MVP award Tuesday, becoming the first player to capture the honor for three consecutive years.

Cross country teams make it to Nationals

The No. 19 men's cross country team qualified for the 2003 NCAA National Championships late Tuesday through an at-large bid. Thirty-one teams were chosen to compete in the men's and women's championship.

Fanter leaves IU

Jeff Fanter, IU Assistant Athletic Director of Media Relations, resigned Monday. Fanter, who has been in the Media Relations department since 1999, said he resigned because of changes in philosophy that current Athletic Director Terry Clapacs brought to the position when he was hired last year.

No. 11. Not since 1987 have the Hoosiers been ranked this high. Heading into the Regional Championships last weekend, IU was able to say they were one of the top 15 teams in the nation.

Another dip in Oaken Bucket

With the Purdue Boilermakers coming to town, practices will be a little more intense this week. IU coach Gerry DiNardo and the Hoosiers (2-9, 1-6 Big Ten) have their eyes focused on the prize, or Bucket in this case, as they prepare for the 106th rendition of the Old Oaken Bucket game against Purdue.

Football players won't be charged for phone fraud

The Monroe County prosecutor has declined to press charges against IU football players involved in a phone fraud investigation, an IU Police Department spokesman said Tuesday. IUPD Lt. Jerry Minger said the department will leave the case open but "inactive," since the prosecutor said there aren't grounds to press criminal charges. Minger said the department had done all it could with the investigation.

Hoosiers nab tourney spot

The NCAA Selection Committee announced the pairings for the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Monday afternoon. The IU men's soccer team waited to see who it would play, and if it would host a game, after it won the Big Ten Tournament 1-1 Sunday by advancing on penalty kicks against Penn State (9-10-1, 1-5-0 Big Ten).

A-Rod beats Delgado, Posada for MVP

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez became the second player from a last-place team to win a Most Valuable Player award, then confirmed that the Texas Rangers have approached him about a possible trade. "Management has approached me with a situation and some choices, and I'm just going to keep my doors open right now," Rodriguez said Monday from Mexico during a telephone conference call. Rodriguez received 242 points for the American League award in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado was second with 210 points, followed by New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada with 194.

Team signs four recruits

The IU women's volleyball team announced Monday that four high school seniors have signed letters of intent to attend IU beginning in the fall of 2004. IU coach Katie Weismiller will welcome Gabrielle Allison (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), Lauren Ditteon (Terre Haute, Ind./South Vigo), Annie Moddrell (Freeburg, Ill./Freeburg Community) and Christine Nilles (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) to Bloomington.

Peterson steps up pace, reaches personal goal

TERRE HAUTE -- Having continued with her fitness level of last season, junior Mindy Peterson continually tried to put together a good race during this season after finishing as IU's top runner in every meet last season except for the Big Ten Championship.
