Big Ten play opens with tough losses

In a Big Ten doubleheader this weekend at the Mellencamp Pavilion, the IU field hockey team dropped its first game against No. 7 ranked Michigan, 4-1. Three years removed from a national championship, Michigan dominated most of the game with its aggressive play by scoring the first three goals before IU had a chance to put one up on the board.

Cubs lose crucial series with Mets NEW YORK -- Al Leiter pitched a two-hit ball for six innings to earn his first win in six weeks, and the New York Mets put another dent in Chicago's playoff hopes Sunday with a 3-2 victory over the Cubs.

Peterson nets hat trick as IU wins

Sophomore Jacob Peterson put on a show for his home state as the IU men's soccer team moved to 6-2 while opening up its Big Ten season in East Lansing, Mich., by defeating Michigan State 3-1 at Old College Field. The Portage, Mich., native scored all three goals as he joined a group of three former IU players and one current IU player, junior midfielder Mike Ambersley, to score a hat trick in a game.

Hoosiers control first half only to be blanked in second

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for the Hoosier football team Saturday. If Charles Dickens himself could have written the script for a football game, it would probably look like IU's 30-20 loss against Michigan State as the Hoosiers played drastically different between the two halves.

Spittoon Squandered

In a battle for ownership of The Old Brass Spittoon, the trophy turned from IU crimson to Michigan State green in a matter of 30 minutes Saturday as a flat second half saw the Hoosiers squander a 20-7 halftime lead and fall to the Spartans 30-20.

No longer unblemished, champs open Big Ten play

Hoosiers prepare for Big Ten action

Last season, the IU women's field hockey program, which had never finished a season with a winning record, entered Big Ten conference play with an eye toward bucking the trend. But the tough Big Ten competition thwarted any Hoosier hopes of finishing the season above .500, as the team finished with an 8-10 record. This year's Hoosier squad enters conference play 6-2 and ready to prove themselves in the Big Ten.

Maddux wins 15th for 17th straight year PITTSBURGH -- Greg Maddux reached 15 wins for a record 17th consecutive season. Getting to 200 innings made him just as happy, "You always have your goals," Maddux said Thursday after leading the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3. "One of them is always to win 20, but you always have a goal to pitch 200 innings. If you can go out there and get your 200 innings, you have to be doing something right."

Spartan Showdown

A new season and a new focus have come for the IU football team as it begins Big Ten action Saturday against the 1-2 Michigan State Spartans. The Hoosiers (2-1) seek to avenge both last week's 51-32 loss against the Kentucky Wildcats and their inability to defeat MSU in the last two seasons.

Six teams rise and fall with young QBs

Experienced quarterbacks are proving their worth in the Big Ten. Just look at the stats. The top four passing offenses (Purdue, Northwestern, Penn State and Illinois) are all led by veteran quarterbacks. Five of the top seven quarterbacks in pass efficiency are holdovers. "If you're going to have only one experienced player back on your squad, you'd want him back at quarterback," said Purdue coach Joe Tiller, who has the luxury of having the best returning quarterback in the conference, Kyle Orton.

Colts' James held out of practice but upgraded to questionable for Sunday

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James was upgraded from doubtful to questionable for this week's game against Green Bay despite missing Wednesday's practice. Coach Tony Dungy said James worked out earlier in the day but was held out of the afternoon practice. Dungy said Thursday's practice could help clear up James' playing status.

Growing up in Chesterfield, Mo., strong safety Will Meyers was a First-Team All-Conference Athlete as a defensive and running back, an All-Area/All-Purpose Player and Parkway West High School's MVP for his senior season. His football accomplishments earned him much attention throughout the state; in fact, he was chosen to the All-State football squad as both defensive back and running back. And his talents did not stop there.

Boilers spike Hoosiers to open conference play

The IU volleyball team wasn't able to rebound Wednesday evening from its three-match losing streak in West Lafayette. The Hoosiers fell to Purdue University in straight sets (30-22, 30-20, 30-12). The defeat dropped the team to 6-6 on the year and 0-1 in conference play, with what could prove to be a very difficult Big Ten schedule coming up.

Defense get big lift from transfer

Junior linebacker Paul Szczesny had a choice. When it came time to choose a school to continue his football career he had options: He could have been a Trojan, a Sooner, a Bruin or a Badger. Instead he decided to become a Hoosier, and the coaching staff and he couldn't be happier with the decision, he said. Szczesny (pronounced Skez-nee) thought about staying out West, but his Niles, Ill., roots brought him back to the Midwest as he began to consider schools in the heartland of America.

Fundamentals key to defense

Though the Hoosier football defense has been opportunistic, forcing 10 turnovers, teams have been getting up and down the field averaging 481.3 yards per game, ranking the defense at No. 108 in the country. The past two games have been rough for the Hoosier defense, as they gave up 495 yards to the University of Oregon and season-high 560 yards in a 51-32 to the University of Kentucky.

Yankees take care of Blue Jays for Loaiza's 100th win

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi homered to end the longest slump of his career, and Esteban Loaiza finally earned his 100th career victory and first for the Yankees, leading New York over the Toronto Blue Jays 5-3 Tuesday night. Gary Sheffield hit his 36th home run two days after getting a pair of cortisone shots. Alex Rodriguez almost homered for the Yankees, too, but was robbed on a spectacular catch by center fielder Vernon Wells.

For the past two years, billiards has been conspicuously missing from the long list of intramural sports offered by the IU RecSports program, but this fall marks its return. The program initially left campus due to lack of participation, but because students missed the program, it is back by popular demand.
