The greatest college weekend?

The self-proclaimed "World's Greatest College Weekend" is upon us. That sounds awfully presumptuous, and I myself have doubts about Little 500. To believe that a late April weekend in Indiana has been termed the greatest of anything comes as a surprise to this Florida transplant. I would expect maybe the greatest ratio of tooth decay, but the "World's Greatest College Weekend?" Wow, that's a tough pill to swallow.

2nd alumni race brings former riders back for more

Visitors and alumni swarming Bloomington for this year's Little 500 will have a hand in the weekend's events when they will participate in the Little 500 alumni race Saturday. The alumni race is divided into heats by the decade the rider attended IU.

Wright declares for NBA draft

IU junior guard Bracey Wright declared he would forego his senior season and enter the NBA draft, IU coach Mike Davis said in a statement Wednesday. "I am excited about the possibility of playing in the NBA and it has always been a dream of mine," the 6-foot-3 Wright said in a statement. "I want to thank coach Davis and all of the assistant coaches for the things they have taught me. I also want to thank my teammates for being there for me throughout my career."

Wanted: Fans to fill stands

Tim Fitzpatrick knows he can't change the past. He's just trying to learn from it. As Associate Athletics Director for External Operations, Fitzpatrick is leading the athletics department's marketing team to revive recent years' sluggish IU football ticket sales. While the team's losses have mounted, season ticket sales have dropped by nearly one-third compared to five years ago among the general public and the student body, according to the IU Athletic Ticket Office.

Editor's Note: This is from an interview conducted October 8, 2004 The Little 500 bike race -- the main attraction of what is known as the "World's Greatest College Weekend" -- is held Friday and Saturday. Hollywood portrayed the bike race 25 years ago in "Breaking Away," and the film remains unofficial required viewing for IU freshmen. Dennis Christopher's role as Dave Stohler, the leading "Cutter," brought the young actor three movie industry awards, including the Golden Globe's New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture. For anyone who hasn't seen the film, Union Board will play the movie at 8 p.m. Friday in Dunn Meadow.

Hoosiers earn nonconference win at Miami of Ohio

The Hoosier baseball team took a break from Big Ten action Wednesday as they battled Miami University of Ohio in a non-conference match-up. IU was victorious 5-2 -- even with five errors in the game. IU coach Bob Morgan said he was pleased with the team's performance despite the mistakes made on the field.

Wright heading to NBA

Bracey Wright will enter the NBA draft rather than return to IU for his senior year, coach Mike Davis announced Wednesday. 1st all-black women's team set to race

This time, Old Man Winter wouldn't confine them to working out at the Student Recreational Sports Center, or even worse, doing nothing at all. NEW YORK -- When NHL labor talks resume, a new plan will be up for discussion that attempts to blend elements from both sides' vision of how players will be paid. Negotiations will probably resume next week, during which a new, hybrid concept -- which addresses the relationship between player costs and league revenues -- will be brought to the table, a source close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday.

NBA, NHL, others turn in drug policies

WASHINGTON -- The NBA and NHL were among six groups that turned over documents about their drug-testing policies to the congressional committee looking into steroids in sports. The House Government Reform Committee had set Tuesday as a deadline for getting information about drug programs and test results. Major League Soccer, the ATP, USA Track & Field and the U.S. Soccer Federation responded in time, while USA Cycling asked for and was granted an extension because of a snowstorm near its headquarters.
