Dungy, Colts trying to figure out what's wrong with run defense

Tiki Barber and Brandon Jacobs overpowered the Indianapolis Colts run defense. Fred Taylor and Maurice Drew shredded it. Three games into the season, the Colts have struggled to stop any team this side of the grounded Houston Texans, but players and coaches aren't worried yet. Sure, they all agree improvement is needed, but they don't think a major overhaul is needed.

Former NHL player new hockey coach

As a former player in the National Hockey League and an experienced coach, Al Karlander's strategy for winning a national title with the IU club hockey team is surprisingly simple. "We need to improve two things (to win a national title): We need to play better team defense since we allowed too many goals in big games last year. But we also need to improve our already sound offensive," Karlander said. "I always say that the best defense is a good offense."

Golfer 'Lord Byron' dies at 94

IRVING, Texas -- Byron Nelson, golf's courtly "Lord Byron" whose 11 straight tournament victories in 1945 stand as one of sports' most enduring records, died Tuesday. He was 94.

Hoosiers looking to dethrone Wolverines at top of Big Ten conference

In the Big Ten, coming out on top doesn't always come easy. For the past four years, No. 3 Michigan has won the women's cross country Big Ten title. While the Wolverines are heavily favored to win their fifth straight title, the No. 29 IU women's cross country team is looking to make a dent in the rest of the field.

Hoeppner back at the helm

New Orleans plays 1st home game since Hurricane Katrina

Hoosiers look to be a presence in Big Ten

Tough schedule ahead for Hoosiers this season

IU men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson preaches that the best offensive is a good defense. This idea, one practiced among many sports, also holds true for the IU women's volleyball team. The Hoosiers understand the importance of defense and have scholarship athletes in the defensive specialist positions. These players anchor the back row and start most plays, but they don't get a lot of fan recognition.

The start of another Big Ten season is barreling down on the IU volleyball team, and it holds 11 squads -- five of which are ranked in the top 25 nationally. Lewis makes the most of his opportunity at quarterback

For IU freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis, changing positions was never an option. Lewis was recruited by plenty of big-time football programs during his senior year at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Fla. The University of Florida, the University of Maryland, North Carolina State University and Illinois -- to name a few -- were all interested in Lewis' services.

Cleaning Up

IU coach Terry Hoeppner might have changed the atmosphere around his football team last year, but he was unable to change the team's fortunes during the Big Ten portion of the season. The 2005 Hoosier squad managed just one win during conference play, ended the season on a six-game losing streak and finished in last place in the Big Ten with a 1-7 record.
