For freshman Kelly Lawrence, football was a way of life growing up. "I played football since I was 5 years old," Lawrence said. "As soon as I touched the ball, I knew this is what I wanted to do. I just kept on playing for the love of the game, and it's just gone from there."

Hoosiers looking to avenge close losses

·

Mick Lyon has a recipe for scoring goals. "You start with talent," the IU women's soccer coach says. "You've got to have talented players to score goals. There's no doubt about it. And then that talent has to be fit and motivated. And I think you put those three things together, and that's what we have this year that we didn't have last year."

Doom in the gloom

·

The game began as the rain continued. Sloppy weather conditions were exceeded only by sloppier football play as the Hoosiers played their final nonconference game against the University of Connecticut Saturday. Soon it grew clear as the skies grew cloudy that this would not be a high-scoring game. Things seemed set for doom in the gloom.

BCA sees progress in minority hiring practices

·

INDIANAPOLIS -- NCAA Division I universities improved this year in considering minority candidates for head football coaches, but more progress is needed and resorting to civil rights laws might be necessary, the Black Coaches Association said Thursday. With only 10 minority head coaches currently among more than 200 Division I-A and I-AA schools that are not historically black institutions, universities must appoint more minority coaches and more diverse search committees for vacant positions. Evidence shows the latter leads to more minority coaches being considered, the BCA said.
