IU hoping to secure NCAA Tournament bid despite loss

For the IU women's soccer team, history needs to be enough in the eyes of the NCAA. The Hoosiers (9-7-4, 5-4-1 Big Ten), who compiled a 13-game unbeaten streak from Sept. 1 through Oct. 13, finished their season Thursday night with a 2-1 loss to Michigan in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. The 13-game unbeaten streak was one short of the program record of 14, but after the streak, IU ended its season with a five-game losing streak.

Wilmont's energy keys IU win

No one told Rod Wilmont that Sunday's game was supposed to be an exhibition. In the first game under his new coach, Wilmont was his old self -- jumping at steals, flying into the stands, even careening into Kelvin Sampson as he raced down the sideline in hot pursuit of a loose ball.

Hoosiers seeking first bowl bid since 1993

With his team just one win away from clinching its first bowl game berth in 13 years, junior fullback Josiah Sears knows IU's focus has changed. "If it hasn't, I think there's something wrong with us," Sears said. "Because we have (a bowl game) within our grasp. We're going to have to screw up to not go now."

Colts, Patriots continue rivalry with showdown Sunday

There are plenty of subplots to Sunday night's game between two of the NFL's best teams -- Adam Vinatieri's first against the team for which he kicked two Super-Bowl-winning field goals, Manning's struggles against the Patriots and Brady's growing comfort with his new receivers.

Hoosiers head down to Texas for battle with pair of top teams

The IU men's swimming and diving team will travel this weekend to Austin, Texas, to challenge No. 4 University of Texas and No. 6 University of California in a dual meet. The Hoosiers, coming off a weekend during which they split meets against Northwestern and Arizona State, are looking to build on their 2-1 record.

IU hoping to protect perfect record during weekend matches

The IU women's swimming and diving team has gotten off to a hot start, racing out to a 3-0 record. The No. 17 Hoosiers will put their unblemished record on the line as they travel to Austin, Texas, to face No. 11 Texas Saturday. The Longhorns are 1-1, with a loss to No. 6 Stanford University Oct. 27 and a win against the University of Nebraska Oct. 12. Texas finished second in the Big 12 Relays Oct. 13.

IU suffers 2-1 defeat to Wolverines, early exit from Big Ten Tournament

The IU women's soccer team exited the Big Ten Tournament early Thursday night after losing to Michigan 2-1 at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. The Hoosiers got on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute of play; however, the Wolverines rallied to overcome the deficit, spelling the end of IU's 2006 Big Ten season.

One-way ticket to the top

Kellen Lewis never thought he'd put up such big numbers so soon. Coming into the season, the freshman quarterback was not even expecting to play. "When I came here, Blake was only a redshirt sophomore," Lewis said, referring to junior quarterback Blake Powers. "I envisioned having to wait in line and maybe junior year come in and take control of the offense. But eight touchdown passes in two home games? I definitely wasn't expecting that." Lewis didn't have to wait in line. In IU's second game of the season against Ball State, with Powers on the sidelines nursing a leg injury and senior Graeme McFarland knocked out with a shoulder injury, the Hoosiers turned to their third-string quarterback. And in his first collegiate game, Lewis did not disappoint. With his team down 23-7 at halftime, the redshirt freshman led IU all the way back from the deficit, throwing for 228 yards and a touchdown with 88 rushing yards and a rushing score.

Hoosiers finish up '06 season

The IU women's golf team had one last task to complete Tuesday before ending its season: Compete in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate tournament in Kiawah Island, S.C. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the team placed a season-low 11th in the 19-team field.
