Hoosiers serve up grand slam during victory

The weather in Carbondale, Ill., may have been too cold to play in, but the Hoosiers’ offense heated up at just the right time. Sophomore infielder Stephanie Pellerito hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, as the Hoosiers (3-4) rallied for a 6-2 win Sunday against Ball State, splitting two games at the Kay Brechtelsbaur Southern Classic. The Hoosiers were defeated by Western Illinois by the same score Saturday.

PEORIA, Ariz. – Mark Prior’s return didn’t answer as many questions as it created. Prior, who missed most of last season because of injuries, started, allowed three earned runs and got just four outs before Chicago manager Lou Piniella pulled the Cubs’ former ace from Monday’s exhibition game against the Seattle Mariners.

Miami’s Wade will try comeback this season

MIAMI – Dwyane Wade’s dislocated left shoulder is so fragile there’s a risk of aggravating the injury when he sleeps. But come April, Wade figures he might be up to the rigors of the NBA playoffs. The All-Star guard said Monday he has decided to delay surgery and rehabilitate his shoulder with the goal of returning to help the Miami Heat defend their league title.

After a strong performance at the NCAA Zone C meet this weekend, the IU women’s diving squad put itself in a favorable position for next week’s NCAA championships.

Track athletes vie for NCAA bid

The men’s and women’s track teams sent select members who were on the cusp of going to nationals to South Bend this weekend as a part of the Alex Wilson Invitational held at Notre Dame.

Hoosier fans inside Assembly Hall on Saturday night maintained their usual set of chants and cheers for IU coach Kelvin Sampson, senior guards Errek Suhr and Rod Wilmont, and the rest of the standards usually yelled at home games.

Buckeyes thwart IU’s tourney hopes

A storybook ending just wasn’t in the cards. Playing the night after a convincing victory over Iowa in the Big Ten tournament, the IU women’s basketball team fell to Ohio State 72-60 Friday night.

UPDATE: Wilmont, Calloway say goodbye to Assembly Hall with each recording a double-double

The IU men’s basketball team defeated Penn State 94-63 Saturday night in Assembly Hall, completing a perfect 15-0 record at home this season. Senior guard Rod Wilmont led the Hoosiers with 21 points and 11 rebounds. The Hoosiers tied the school’s single-game record for three-pointers made with 17. IU finished the game 17-of-32 from beyond the arc.

Hoosiers to face No. 2 Ohio State in tough road match

When Ty Tucker took over as Ohio State men’s tennis coach in the 1999 to 2000 campaign, the Buckeyes had never been to the NCAA Tournament. Eight seasons later, Ohio State has been to seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments, is the defending Big Ten champion after a nine-year reign by Illinois and is the nation’s second-ranked team.

IU hoping to make run at Big Ten championship

After a loss at Wisconsin to end the regular season, the IU wrestling team is ready to get back on the mat and chase history. The Hoosiers haven’t won a Big Ten title as a team since 1943, and are looking to add to their 13 Big Ten championships March 3-4 at the 2007 Big Ten championships at Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.

Hoosiers defeat Iowa, advance in Big Ten tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – This time around, the IU women’s basketball team would not allow Iowa’s 3-point shot to beat them. The Hawkeyes attempted 19, but only connected on four in a 67-53 Hoosier win in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament.

On Saturday night, when the Hoosiers take on Penn State at 8 p.m. in Assembly Hall, three members of the IU men’s basketball team will step onto Branch McCracken Court for the final time in their careers as Hoosiers. Senior guards Rod Wilmont, Errek Suhr and Earl Calloway have had different experiences during their times at IU. But each player has created his own identity and used it on the basketball court.
