Nationals revoke Theta Chi charter

Theta Chi's national organization revoked the IU chapter's charter Friday because of a Jan. 27 party at the house. Alcohol was served at the party, a violation of the chapter's probation, said David Westol, executive director of Theta Chi fraternity. The party is also at the center of the IU Police Department's investigation into freshman Seth Korona's death.

In memory of Paul Nutter: student, friend, fighter

When I spoke to my friend Paul for the last time in October, I knew things weren't good. I had hoped to visit him, and he told me, "Maybe in a few weeks, when I feel better." He never felt better. For the past few months, I tried to call him, but either the phone was busy or no one answered. Last week, I finally spoke to his mother. "There's some sad news," she said.

After defeating Northwestern Wednesday, interim head coach Mike Davis said the Hoosiers can beat any team in the Big Ten. The rest of the league might have something to say about that. First up for the Hoosiers is conference leader No. 4 Illinois at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Assembly Hall.

Student earns All-USA spot

Senior Philip Roessler was one of 20 college students named to the 12th annual USA Today All-USA Academic First Team Thursday. Roessler is part of the team selected from 682 nominees nationwide for his intellectual achievement and leadership. Members of the first team are awarded $2,500 and were featured in Thursday’s USA Today.

Napster ruling affects campus

Students and staff had mixed reactions Monday to a San Francisco appeals court ruling that U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel must edit her original injunction against Napster Inc. The revision must state it only prevents the unauthorized trade of copyrighted music by users. The appeals court also ruled the company must delete from its Web site all links allowing users to exchange copyrighted material in the form of MP3 files.

Team heads east in second weekend

Normally, junior Brooke Monroe and sophomore Stormy Hanson are just your run-of-the-mill energetic athletes. But this week the two have hardly been able to contain their excitement. After weeks of anxiously awaiting the start of the women's softball season, the Hoosiers' scheduled season opener Saturday at Evansville was canceled because of soggy field conditions. The cancellation of the game has made the co-captains that much more ecstatic about starting the season, which they will finally be able to do today against Virginia at the Triangle Classic at North Carolina State.

Team anxious for outdoor action, start of season

If IU's baseball players appear anxious, it's probably because they want to go outside and play. Because of poor weather conditions this spring, the Hoosiers have only ventured outdoors to practice twice, coach Bob Morgan said.

This weekend, the Hoosier Hills Track and Field Invitational offers the women's team opportunities to improve times and marks a week before the Big Ten Championships. Some athletes won't run their main events to avoid injury, while others will aim for personal records.

As the wrestling team's regular season comes to a close, Big Ten teams continue to jockey for position in the standings. The 22nd-ranked Hoosiers have an important weekend coming up with road matches against Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Minority assumes office

Bobby Fong has come a long way from teaching himself English from comic books and math from baseball cards. For Butler University, the 2001-02 academic year ushers in a new era. Fong will be replacing interim president Gwen A. Fountain in June. Geoffrey Banister, who served as president for 10 years, ended his term a year ago.

'Love, Candy' uses memories, songs for laughter

Laughing at yourself in love was the theme of "Love, Candy" at the Bloomington Playwright's Project, 308 S. Washington St., Wednesday night. Anyone who ever got excited when the cute boy at school said "hello" or looked to see how the pretty girl in class signed her Valentine could relate to this event.

AIDS play explores friendship

During the past two decades, the AIDS epidemic has taken many lives and left lasting impressions on society. The virus, which attacks the human immune system, has changed attitudes and ideas about sex, sexuality and life. AIDS also is the subject of some of the most haunting and beautiful works of modern art -- especially that of the theater.

Musical to close tonight

Tonight is the last chance to catch this year's national tour of the classic musical "Show Boat" at the IU Auditorium. Based on a novel by Edna Ferber and created for the stage by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, the original "Show Boat" had its debut in 1927 to rave reviews. Set on the Mississippi River in the late 1800s, the crew of the boat, the Cotton Blossom, takes the audience to a bygone day as "Show Boat" follows the lives of Cap'n Andy Hawkes, his wife Parthy and his daughter Magnolia.
