Depression plays beautiful

·

The work of Clifford Odets, one of the most esteemed and controversial playwrights in America in the 20th century, was brought to life this weekend at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 S. Walnut St., by actors from Bloomington High Schools North and South.

'Monologues' moving, powerful

·

Laughter, tears, screaming, silence and moaning filled the Fine Arts Auditorium at 3 p.m. Sunday as 13 women from the IU and Bloomington communities presented "The Vagina Monologues" to a standing-room-only crowd. The audience, composed of people of all ages, genders and races, was united in appreciation of the show, which deals with a usually taboo topic -- the vagina. The crowd contributed as much to the production as the actresses themselves: their laughter, applause and response created a comfortable, accepting mood in which the performers could shine.

Ask the Sexpert

·

Dear Sexpert, I've been dating this guy for a while now, and I know he likes me a lot. The thing is, I have a serious crush on one of his best friends, and I know he feels the same way about me. I've talked to him about the situation before, and we can't decide what to do. Neither of us wants to hurt the guy I'm seeing now, but we really want to start seeing each other. Is there any way to make this work without ruining their friendship and having them both end up hating me?

In our own words

·

When I was asked to write a column for today's IDS, I had trouble deciding how I was going to get 35,000 students to vote for ONE in 500 words or less. I contemplated reiterating our entire platform, focusing on our dedication or stressing our ticket's diversity.

Amplify student voice

·

The Miracle ticket is running in the IU Student Association elections for two reasons: to amplify the individual voice of every student on this campus and to work with issues that concern those students which can be successfully negotiated within our one-year term. These are the two things we feel can greatly improve the lives of students right here, right now.

On the Internet, it isn't business as usual

·

Just as the Internet has become ubiquitous in our lives, so have the stories of its darling companies hitting the pavement. The combined value of three of the Internet's most famous names -- Amazon.com, eBay and Yahoo! -- has gone from about $188 billion at the height of the dot-com mania to a dismal $23.5 billion today. Many people are wondering if that means e-commerce is just hype.

Reflections on IUSA, after a year on the inside

·

One year ago, I was wandering around campus, presenting to student groups and hanging fliers and banners while talking to people about IU Student Association. Our campaign was different than any before, with stickers, sandwich boards and door hangers that flooded Bloomington with information about our "not another four letter word" ticket. We strived to be realistic in our approach and our goals -- and I would like to think we have been successful.

Changing the face of IUSA

·

Once every year, students find themselves trying to escape from those running for office in the IU Student Association elections. The tickets that come together make T-shirts, fliers and banners, and try to convince everyone they know to vote for them. They hold press conferences and unveil platforms. They travel to residence halls, greek houses and student organizations to get endorsements and votes. They always speak about making IUSA more efficient, more accessible and more student-friendly.

Campus needs improvement

·

The decision to run in the IU Student Association election is not one to be entered into selfishly, nor is it to be taken lightly. There must be a selfless commitment to serving the student body and a clear attempt to use the power of IUSA to accomplish practical goals to improve student life and the campus as a whole.

Humor is in the eye of the beholder

·

Every now and then, I get an e-mail or a letter from someone asking me how to be funny. "Chris," they say, "I'm just an ordinary schlep, girls don't like me and my friends all make fun of me. How can I be funny like you? What's the secret to writing a humor column?"

Scrutiny of national defense necessary

·

Missile defense, nuclear weapons and a $296 billion budget for 2001. Throw in the technology needed for biological warfare, and you have full proof that the U.S. military does not mess around. When Americans talk about national security, they mean it in every sense of the phrase.

Around the campus

At the College Media Advisers/Columbia Scholastic Press Association conference in New York City last week, the IDS and the Arbutus yearbook garnered the Columbia Scholastic Press Association's top award.

IUPD offers officer training to students

·

It seems everybody played cops and robbers as a child, holding a plastic gun and sprinting after a buddy while screaming, "Freeze! Police. Put up your hands!" To some students, these are memories better left in the past. For others, these games were the beginning of a career in law enforcement.

'Showboat' a painful experience

Thursday evening, I missed "Survivor." For the first time, I'm not sure watching "Survivor" would have been the greater evil. I braved fog and rain to make the 60-minute drive to Bloomington to see "Show Boat." During the Chicago run several years ago, I attended no less than five performances. The show became one of my all-time favorites. Nothing but fond memories of "Show Boat."

Program seeks to help youths

·

Thirteen chairs. No table. For a dozen teenagers, these sessions give them a chance to talk about their lives, their relationships with their peers and how to live without crime. They are part of Juvenile Alternative Management Sessions, a program of Monroe County Community Corrections.

IUSA elections can affect your life

IU Student Association elections started at midnight today and will continue until midnight tomorrow. Although this year's election has not been as visible as past years, IUSA is still the student group on campus with the most power as far as administrators are concerned.

Water polo squad headed to Michigan

There definitely is not any rest in sight for the weary water polo team. After splitting four matches at the Princeton Invitational last weekend, the Hoosiers look to break the .500 mark this weekend as they travel to Ann Arbor to compete in the Michigan Invitational.
