Effective treatments work to fight depression

·

Some say college is supposed to be one of the "best times of your life." But many students feel more miserable than ever, disconnected and alone. They feel sad, trapped by inertia or fatigue, hopeless and not "up to the challenge" of college.

Women's participation declining

·

Throughout the last decade, womens' sports have made their mark in American society. The United States has witnessed WNBA's introduction in 1997, the 1999 Women's World Cup Championship and the Olympic dominance in softball.

Friday was one of the gloomiest days of the school year. It was cold, rainy, and windy. But the bad weather did not stop the men's cross-country team from participating in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend. Despite lackluster running conditions, the team took a turn in the right direction.

Well, I'm stunned. And I wish I went to Madison, Wis., Saturday. I decided not to drive seven hours to watch IU lose. But instead of losing, IU walloped Wisconsin.

James Dean fans commemorate legend's life, career and death

·

FAIRMONT, IND. -- Every year on Sept. 30, thousands of people are drawn to a small town in northeast Indiana. They come from all over the globe for one reason, for one person who isn't even there anymore: James Dean. Fairmount, the town where Dean grew up, has become the annual magnet for people who want to celebrate his life and his image. They participate in parades and look-alike contests, place flowers on his grave and have been known to even steal his headstone.

Friends in the mix

·

Last Thursday, I spent an hour on the phone with one of my IU friends. We covered how to convince her parents to let her go abroad for a semester, bar-hopping clothes for that night and who among our friends is hooking up with whom.

Hard to find peace in pacifism

·

Going home to Evansville over the weekend was frustrating and gratifying at the same time. It was frustrating because I'm low on sleep, there is still no I-69 road and I have mounds of studying to catch up on. On the other hand, it's wonderful because I got to experience lots of little things rarely found in Bloomington: parking spaces, quality family time, and Evansville's claim to fame, the Fall Festival.

Residents, travelers react to upgraded security and strikes

INDIANAPOLIS -- Travelers arrived at the Indianapolis International Airport Sunday to find Indiana National Guard troops at security checkpoints and lounge televisions tuned to coverage of the U.S. air strikes in Afghanistan. Shortly after President Bush announced that the U.S. military response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had begun, Indiana\'s congressional delegation praised the strikes they had found out about 90 minutes before they occurred. U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., said Americans now must show the world strength, determination and resolve to eradicate terrorism. \"From the moment the terrorists attacked the United States and killed thousands of innocent civilians, this day was inevitable,\" Bayh said in a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press.

The greatest game ever

·

Last Wednesday night, my life received new meaning once again. As obvious by my position, I am a big sports fan. And lately, sports have not been an area of much joy in my life. Being from Chicago, there are pretty much no sports teams to cheer and support.
