State study recommends stronger stance on alcohol

A state study of underage and high-risk drinking made 12 specific recommendations to IU on how it can combat that problem here on campus. The report also criticized IU and other state university administrators for failing to take a harsh stance on alcohol. The report tried to pinpoint the motivations and behaviors behind drinking. Acknowledging that the alcohol problem is not a new one, the report said alcohol use is both a deeply rooted college tradition and a coming of age ritual.

Women's basketball team announces season schedule, prices of ticket packages

Game schedules and ticket prices have been announced for the 2001-2002 women's basketball season. Season ticket packages are available for $39 for adults and $13 for youths 18 and under. All season-ticket holders will be admitted free of charge to the Hoosiers' two exhibition games. The first exhibition is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, against the Reebok Lady Stars. The second will be 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, against Premier Sports.

Zone defense will cause stir on the court

The NBA season opens Tuesday night with more confusion than usual. For the first time, the league will allow teams alternatives to the man-to man defense. The heated debate over this and other rule changes -- coupled of course with Michael Jordan's return -- is leading to strong anticipation for the season's start. The league is stating that allowing teams to play zone defenses will help increase scoring. This makes no sense. To aid the offense, they will allow the defense to have more freedom? I don't think so. But what the new rule will do is increase action.

Hoosiers deserve credit for losing with class

It finally happened Saturday. In a locker room in Iowa City, Iowa, Cam Cameron finally gave me the cold shoulder. Me: "On the first two drives of the second half, did Iowa make any adjustments to take away Antwaan (Randle El) or Levron (Williams)?" Cameron: (Just between me saying "Antwaan" and "Levron") "No," Cameron said abruptly before turning his cheek. That was it. A one-word answer. I got the Bob Knight treatment. But Cameron didn't lose his cool, and instead sat in that pink locker room that makes you want to bake cakes and play with lace-covered dollhouses, subdued as usual. All season, he's been cooperative with the media.

Lone senior looks to lead Hoosiers

Senior Amanda Field is looking to lead the women's tennis team this year after posting a 25-13 (7-3 in Big Ten) record last year. The lone senior has the confidence of team coach Lin Loring, the winningest head coach in collegiate women's tennis history. "Our team captain is Amanda," Loring said. "She's definitely one of our team leaders." Earlier this year, Field competed in the Riviera Women's All-American Championships at the campus of UCLA. She lost her first two matches in qualifying.

Team finishes strong

Men's golf coach Mike Mayer said he had a feeling that a more experienced lineup was what the Hoosiers needed to break through at the 24-team Tillinghast at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. Mayer's hunch paid off as the Hoosiers placed seventh in the 24-team field. "With the lineup that we brought, we got quite a bit out of this tournament," Mayer said. The Hoosiers finished the 36-hole tournament with a total score of 596, putting them 19 strokes behind tournament champion Illinois. IU finished three strokes behind Maryland, the 39th ranked team in the nation, according to Golfweek magazine. The Hoosiers overwhelmed 45th ranked Navy by 22 shots.

Walk-ons provide balance

The women's soccer team has recruited many of the best players in the country. But because the roster has 29 players, and the Hoosiers are only allowed 12 scholarships, most of the team is filled by walk-ons. And coach Joe Kelley has landed three walk-ons who are making an impact on the team. Junior Dana Philp is a back and midfielder. She is one of the team's leaders and a key component to a Hoosier team that has surpassed last year's win total already. Philp has started every game this year, and a total of 40 games in her collegiate career.

League of Women Voters active, diverse

The name of the League of Women Voters might mislead some to think the organization excludes men. But men were given the opportunity to participate in the organization in the 1970s. The name was not altered after the addition of male members because of the group's history, an executive member said. "The league felt it historically needed to remain because of the hard fight women put forth in order to get the right to vote," said Nancy Lumley, vice president of the League of Women Voters of Bloomington and Monroe County.
