Operation Anaconda pounds al Qaeda

SURMAD, Afghanistan -- U.S. warplanes pounded al Qaeda and Taliban mountain strongholds in eastern Afghanistan on Monday while hundreds of coalition ground troops scoured the rugged, snow-covered terrain for pockets of enemy fighters. The heavily armed defenders responded with bursts of mortars, grenades and machine gun fire.

Complaints filed by BSU about mural

At 3 p.m. Monday, over 25 students, mostly from the Black Student Union, marched from the Indiana Memorial Union to the Student Ethics and Harassment Programs building, 705 E. Seventh St. The students filed grievances with the Racial Incidents Team regarding the Thomas Hart Benton mural in Woodburn Hall Room 100 that depicts members of the Ku Klux Klan burning a cross.

Complaints voiced about IUSA election

The IU Student Association election committee heard complaints last night, with heated accusations flying across State Room East of the Indiana Memorial Union. The hearing, which resolved complaints and contestments from the three tickets, lasted for hours as the tickets assailed the actions of their competitors while defending their own. Eight complaints were heard, including four filed by Kirkwood, one filed by Steel, two filed by Synergy and one filed by an outside party. The four complaints filed by the Kirkwood ticket were downgraded from contestments to complaints, leaving the Synergy ticket the only one contesting the election results.

The fuss over the Big Ten Player of the Year keeps brewing. The Big Ten will announce its awards today -- All-Big Ten teams and individual honors -- but coaches let their thoughts fly Monday. Illinois' Bill Self touted junior guard Frank Williams. Michigan State's Tom Izzo flaunted sophomore guard Marcus Taylor. IU's Mike Davis boasted about sophomore forward Jared Jeffries.

Israeli warplanes bomb Palestinian targets, kill 16

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- Israel sent warplanes and tanks against Palestinian targets Monday, killing the wife and three children of a Hamas militant in what the military said was a mistake. In all, 16 Palestinians died in retaliatory raids.

My aunt, 52 years old, has gotten a facelift. Before the surgery, she was already perhaps the youngest-looking 52-year-old on the planet. A lifelong, religious devotee of tanning booths, she has yet to develop any sign of the wrinkly skin they warn us about. When we go out to lunch, she flirts with waiters who don\'t believe it when she says she\'s a grandmother.

Catholic Church must start to rethink celibacy

The Catholic Church started this year in very rough water. January 30, the Archdiocese of Boston reported the names of 90 priests accused of sexually molesting children to the district attorneys; the diocese also admitted to privately settling hundreds of molestation cases.

Personal Responsibility

Indiana law already prohibits alcohol from being provided to minors. Senate Bill 97 would make that law enforceable. If buyers are held responsible for providing alcohol to minors, they will have an incentive to regulate consumption. There will be consequences for leaving kegs unattended, available to those who may not be of age. At large parties where consumption from multiple kegs is difficult to manage, buyers will check IDs at the door or risk being held accountable for underage drinkers with access to their alcohol.

Play fair Kirkwood

Mass e-mails sent by the Kirkwood ticket at 12 o'clock last Tuesday morning have caused a controversy among the tickets in the IUSA election. The University Information Technology Services guidelines say the misuse of e-mail for campaigning purposes is a violation and can result in serious consequences. The Synergy and Steel tickets filed complaints last week, though not jointly, which could take the Kirkwood ticket out of the election for use of mass e-mail. All tickets filed complaints against another for things that could ban the tickets from the election, although only two were for misuse of e-mails. Kirkwood has filed four against Synergy, Synergy has filed two against Kirkwood, and Steel has filed one against Kirkwood.

It's all about credibility

I wish this were The New York Times and I wish President George W. Bush would take a moment to read my column. I know I talk about beer and the greek system a lot, but those are his best memories, aren't they? I think he would enjoy living vicariously through the mishaps of us college students. Hold underage drinkers responsible

This week the Indiana State Senate will vote on Senate Bill 97, which is designed to hold people who buy kegs accountable if minors consume from them. Under the bill, when someone of legal drinking age purchases a keg, he will place his signature and basic information beside a serial number that coincides with the keg. If a party gets busted, then even if the purchaser is not in attendance, he may be held liable for every minor who was there drinking.

Colonial Crest fire began in kitchen

The fire that damaged units of Colonial Crest Apartments Saturday was caused by unattended cooking left on a stove, said Scott Smith, chief fire inspector for the Bloomington Fire Department. It is suspected a resident fell asleep after beginning to cook, he said.
