Governor considers special session

INDIANAPOLIS -- Having failed to obtain tax increases to balance the state budget during the regular legislative session, Gov. Frank O'Bannon is now trying to lay the groundwork for calling lawmakers back to work. He said Wednesday he will consider calling a special legislative session to work on Indiana's pressing financial problems, even if he is unable to broker a deal among leading lawmakers beforehand.

Council created bike lanes

The Southdowns Drive bike lane debate ended Wednesday night when the Bloomington City Council voted 8-1 to change Southdowns into separate one-way streets. The eastbound street will be renamed Sheridan Drive, and the westbound lane will retain the Southdowns name.

Auction to benefit shelter

Lunch with world-renowned drummer Kenny Aronoff could help save an animal's life. So might some home-made soul food cooked up by African American Choral Ensemble director Dr. James E. Mumford. Aronoff, Mumford and Herald-Times political cartoonist Joe Lee will host a benefit auction at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Neal-Marshal Black Culture Center Grand Hall. The auction will raise money for the Monroe County Humane Association's campaign to build a new animal shelter and education center. The men will also donate their time and skills to the highest bidder.

NEW YORK -- Bryant Gumbel said Thursday he was quitting as host of CBS' morning news program, "The Early Show," and will be leaving CBS. The longtime host of NBC's "Today" show was lured back to morning television in November 1999, and CBS spent $30 million to build a new streetside studio in Manhattan to launch "The Early Show."

IU grad plays lead role in Indianapolis

Who wouldn't enjoy a play that talks about a boy meeting a girl, falling in love with her and wanting to marry her? "Anything Goes" is the new version of Hoosier native Cole Porter's Broadway extravaganza, which won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Revival. "The musical is very exciting, and we've wanted to do it for a long time," said Ulrike Steinert, the director of marketing at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre.

Special 'Lucia' to close season

To close out the 2001-2002 IU Opera Theater season, the IU School of Music will present a special production of Donizetti's tragic opera "Lucia di Lammermoor," opening 8 p.m. Friday at the Musical Arts Center. Beyond the fact that "Lucia" is considered one of the great operatic master works of all time, or that it is Donizetti's own personal masterwork of Bel Canto dramatic opera, it will be a rare occasion for a new production to be conceived and executed all for and at IU.

Behrman search continues

Investigators on the Jill Behrman case followed what they called a strong lead to the bottom of a creek near Lake Monroe Tuesday. Bloomington Police Detective Marty Deckard said authorities cannot release whether or not the search turned up evidence in order to protect the sources and the Behrman investigation. Officials would not release the exact location of the search or the origin of the lead.

Arbiters hear Team Major Taylor case

About 30 spectators spilled into the hallway in Franklin Hall yesterday at an arbitration hearing between IUSF and men's Little 500 team, Team Major Taylor. The team was disqualified in late March when it was determined by IUSF that freshman Joshua Weir had competed as a Category I or II rider and was ineligible to take part in the 2002 race.

One Last Celebration

It came near the end of the pep rally yesterday evening. "One more year, one more year." As the IU men's basketball team was presented with season trophies, the crowd of about 5,000 started in on Jared Jeffries, urging the sophomore forward to stay at IU instead of opting to enter the NBA Draft in June.

Despite questions, police legally protected in Monday riots

The crowd that gathered after IU's loss in the NCAA championships has long been dispersed, but many people who were there are still fuming. In response to the melee that ensued, police fired tear gas and pepper powder to disperse the crowd. Some are accusing the police of being overzealous in their reaction, and others are wondering if there are legal ramifications.

Dar Williams impresses Bloomington crowd

You wouldn't have expected the musical experiences the audience felt at the Buskirk-Chumley Theatre Tuesday night. Or rather, you wouldn't have expected it if you had never heard Dar Williams perform. Of course, you also would have been completely stunned by the end of the night. This was certainly a performance to remember for everyone who was able to be there.

Hillel brings Jewish music to Bloomington

The music from "Fiddler on the Roof" is probably the only Jewish music some people have heard. But this coming Saturday, the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center hopes to bring a wider variety of Jewish music to the Bloomington community with its annual Evening of Jewish Music.

When her cue arrives, she unleashes a handsome, mellifluous voice for a song that demands an impressive vocal range.

Siblings Weekend returns

After a three-year absence, Siblings Weekend is making its return to IU April 12-14. Students' siblings, cousins and friends ages 13 and older are are invited to attend this two-and-a-half-day event. The IU Student Association and the Residence Halls Association, the two organizations overseeing the weekend, have scheduled a full weekend of events with Saturday, April 13 holding the main attractions. The day's events include a carnival, tours of Assembly Hall, a concert and a casino night in the Foster Quad formal lounge.
