Iran discovers uranium deposits

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran said Sunday it discovered uranium reserves and was setting up production facilities for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. President Mohammad Khatami said Iran was "determined to make use of advanced nuclear technology for peaceful purposes" after announcing that researchers discovered uranium reserves in central Iran near Yazd and established production facilities in nearby Isfahan and Kashan.

UN talks with Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The U.N. chief weapons inspectors emerged from key talks with Iraq officials Sunday, saying they saw signs of a "change of heart" from Baghdad over disarmament demands and that further U.N. inspections were preferable to a quick U.S.-led military strike.

Ice may have formed on wing of Columbia

SPACE CENTER, Houston -- Investigators are searching for evidence that a block of ice big enough to damage Columbia's wing may have formed on a waste water vent, a problem that plagued an earlier shuttle flight.

Local opera breaks ground

And, if you're in that majority, my guess is that you'll fit right in with 91 percent of women on a college campus who have attempted to control their weight through dieting.

Chocolate Fest a sweet success

In Feb. 5, 2003 the IDS ran a cartoon attacking the University of Michigan's affirmative action policy. Selected by assistant opinion editor John Paul Benitez, the cartoon depicts a white student holding a sign stating, "Perfect SAT score, 12 Points." Next to him a black student holds a sign stating, "Being a minority, 20 Points." A third sign reads, "Feeling entitled to special benefits: Pointless."

The issue: people or politics?

Tuition hikes necessary

With the possibility of another tuition hike this year, some Republican legislators are threatening to cap IU tuition. This comes soon after Gov. Frank O'Bannon announced that the Indiana government can't afford to increase higher education funding. Should IU be forced to cap tuition? Where will it find the money to continue its programs and stay competitive in the educational and research worlds?

Wrestlers revved up for regional rival

Indiana Invitational promises top talent

Today kicks off the No. 17 men's track and field team's first home meet of the season. The Indiana Invitational is a two day meet beginning this afternoon at 4 p.m. and resuming tomorrow at noon. So far this season, the team has faced only dual meet competition. The team dominated their last meet at Illinois last weekend to give them some momentum entering the meet today. Though no team score will be kept, this will be the team's first taste of a big meet atmosphere this season.

Arizona biggest test for Hoosiers

Thursday night, the No. 3 IU men's club volleyball team boarded the plane toward Arizona for their first out of region tournament of the season. The team will play an exhibition against Arizona on Friday before the actual tournament starts in which Arizona will be participating as well. The common consensus between the players, senior Jeremy Levy and junior JT Gripe, as well as coach Ryan Theis, is that playing the No. 1 ranked Arizona will be the team's biggest challenge.

IU pressing on despite hard times

The news hasn't been good for the Hoosiers lately. IU struggled in back to back defeats against No. 4 Duke and Wake Forest last weekend, and they may have lost senior No. 1 singles and doubles player Karie Schlukebir for the season due to undisclosed circumstances.

Water polo team heads west for tournament

Coming off a successful tournament in Michigan two weeks ago, the No. 13 women's water polo team is looking to replicate that success this weekend. The Hoosiers will be in Palo Alto, Calif. from Feb. 8-9 competing in the Stanford Invitational. The Michigan Invitational provided tough competition for the Hoosier women, but this weekend will be especially competitive.
