IUSF, don't release the balloons I am writing concerning the upcoming Little 500 bike race and the traditional balloon release prior to the race presented by IUSF, the IU Student Foundation. Balloon releases, involving hundreds of latex or foil balloons, cause litter which can harm wild, domestic and farm animals, not to mention leave unsightly and environmentally unfriendly debris. The Marine Conservation Society and other organizations have conducted studies of dead marine animals, many of which were found with balloons in their stomachs, indicating that the balloons are either not easily digested or that death occurs shortly after ingestion.

Warnings create paranoia

Late at night on the seventh floor of Campus View apartments, I can hear sawing and hammering. I think someone is building something very large in the room above me. Every time I leave the building, I see a fleet of white Residential Programs and Services pickup trucks parked along the curb. A single maintenance person always seems to be taking the trash out.

Lady Vols back in Final Four

Knoxville, Tenn. -- Tennessee can finally pack its bags. The Lady Vols are headed to the Final Four again. Gwen Jackson scored 20 points and Kara Lawson had 15 as the top-seeded Lady Vols advanced to their 14th Final Four by beating No. 2 Villanova 73-49 in the Mideast Regional final Monday night. Shyra Ely added 14 points and nine rebounds for Tennessee (32-4), which hosted both the subregional and regional and improved its home record in NCAA tournament games to 44-0.

English majors are known to do crazy things. For most people the idea of majoring in English is already insane. But, in addition to that, we also read, write, casually say "whom" as if it's really a "word," and "put things in quotation marks" for no other reason but "fun."

Desire, talent spark runner

Coach Marshall Goss said he hates to watch sophomore distance runner Eric Redman run. He runs with an awkward stride that looks like he is catching himself with each step rather than a typical runner's smooth stride. But Goss said that when Redman runs, he can't take his eyes off him.

The fools in April

In honor of April Fool's Day, I figured it was about time to tackle the most serious campus issue of all: annoying people. There are many wonderful and diverse personality types here at IU, but some of them are rather grating and cause unnecessary stress on the rest of the student body. Since stress affects grades, these individuals must be avoided at all costs.

Senior hits stride, goals outdoors

Rose Richmond isn't satisfied with second place. The senior finished as the national runner-up in the long jump, but remains reluctant to accept anything other than first place. "If she doesn't win she knows there's something she needs to do to win," assistant coach Wayne Pate said.

Wins end regular season

The Hoosiers wrapped up their Collegiate Water Polo Association weekend Sunday with a 12-1 victory over Grove City College. Playing in its last game before postseason play starts, IU dominated the whole way. Against Grove City the Hoosiers took command early, leading 9-0 at halftime. Sophomore Krista Peterson and senior Ginger Wang led IU with three goals each.

Migrant workers value education

For some migrant students, a day filled with homework and classes can't compare to a day of working in the fields with their parents. "Migrant parents take their children to the fields to teach them the value of hard work," said Gerardo Lopez, an assistant professor of education. "To show them what life is like in the fields, and to demonstrate to them that if they did not graduate from school, their job opportunities would probably be limited to migratory work."

Woodlawn not ready for use

Many club sports teams were forced to find a new home for practices and games after the Division of Recreational Sports announced in November it was closing Woodlawn Field for renovations. The reopening was set for this spring, but improvements have not yet been made. Jackie Puterbaugh, associate director of RecSports, said constant use of the field through sports, concerts and parking led to its deterioration.

Fundraiser to benefit local women's shelter

Journalist fired for unauthorized interview

NEW YORK -- NBC fired journalist Peter Arnett on Monday, angered that he had given an unauthorized interview with state-run Iraqi TV saying the American-led war effort initially failed because of Iraq's resistance.

Professor beguiles on piano

Auer Hall is the site of many recitals. Some are by students, others by faculty and still others by visiting musicians. Sunday night's recital would fall under the category of "faculty recital," but in truth there is no appropriate way to categorize that performance except as "phenomenal." The faculty member featured was Edmund Battersby at the piano performing a good hour and a half of music entirely from memory.

War costs might force Hoosiers to pay $500 for 'Iraqi Freedom'

Homeland security and the war in Iraq could cost the average Indiana resident more than $500, The Indianapolis Star reported. The figure covers everything from missiles to a set of "red alert" warning signs purchased by Hendricks County officials, according to an analysis by the Star for Friday's paper. The Bush administration estimated the war will cost about $74.7 billion.

Judge hears challenge to same-sex marriage ban

'Head of State' heads weekend box office

LOS ANGELES -- Audiences gave their votes to Chris Rock and put his presidential farce "Head of State" in the lead with a weekend box office of $14 million. The Steve Martin and Queen Latifah comedy "Bringing Down the House," the top movie for three straight weekends, held the runner-up slot with $12.5 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

US pushes toward Baghdad

U.S.-led troops fought pitched battles with Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard within 50 miles of the capital Monday as coalition warplanes pounded the city and dozens of other Iraqi positions in advance of the battle for Baghdad. Two U.S. soldiers were killed in fierce fighting for control of the south-central city of Najaf.
