Whenever I hear an argument with "I know it's impossible to argue with the liberal media, but ..." I automatically roll my eyes. As a journalist, I know that I shouldn't do that. The speaker could proceed to say the most intelligent and thought-provoking commentary, but I wouldn't be listening. I instinctively tune out at the phrase "liberal media bias." I'm sure people who believe in a vast "left-wing conspiracy" aren't bad people, but to characterize a faceless institution such as the media -- something that has no consciousness of its own -- with a political agenda is laughable.
A few days after the war officially started I was on a plane to Atlanta reading The New York Times. I came upon an interesting article about how 12 Republican congressmen signed a letter to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, complaining that journalists -- specifically Peter Jennings -- were asking soldiers "inappropriate" questions … (and) asked Mr. Rumsfeld to explain why he wasn't imposing "censorship." My initial reaction was to laugh at the absurdity, but now that we are a couple weeks into the conflict, it's not so funny.
The other day I learned why President George Bush doesn't seem to consider public opinion. He intentionally ignores it. I found this out on Page 259 of Bob Woodward's book "Bush at War." Woodward quotes Bush saying, "I don't read the editorial pages. I don't -- the hyperventilation that tends to take place over these cables … is background noise."

NEW YORK -- "Master of the Senate," Robert Caro's epic third volume of his Lyndon Johnson series, won the Pulitzer Prize for biography Monday. The fiction prize went to Jeffrey Eugenides for "Middlesex," a story of sexual and ethnic identity. Big books prevailed in the arts. Caro's work runs 1,100 pages, Eugenides' more than 500 pages and the winner for history, Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn," is just over 700 pages. Reaching Atkinson, whose book is the first of a planned World War II trilogy, proved especially challenging.

The cost of living in the dorms will go up again next year after the IU board of trustees approved a 6 percent increase in room cost at their monthly meeting Friday.
IU will receive a $50 million donation from the Lilly Endowment toward its genomics research initiative. The grant will be announced today and will be the second investment Lilly has made to IU since its initial $105 million grant two years ago.
The Hoosiers wrapped up a successful weekend despite more bad weather. The team won 10 out of 18 total races competing against Dayton and Cincinnati. Despite the poor weather, coach Mark Wilson said he felt the team played better than in its last regatta. "Overall, it was a good race," Wilson said in a statement. "We definitely improved from last weekend."
