LPGA tournament kicks off

Karen Dennison, a junior and member of the IU golf team, is all set to make her professional debut Friday at the LPGA Giant Eagle Classic in Vienna, Ohio. The talented Dennison will have her hands full during this tournament that also features last weekend's McDonald's LPGA Championship winner, Annika Sorenstam and runner-up, Grace Parks. With the Squaw Creek Country Club being the venue once again this year, the tournament promises to be a sensational affair. This private, well-maintained course will be quite challenging with its water hazards and numerous trees, and it will cause players to alter their shots very often. The rough, woods and water hazards account for over 70 percent of the entire course and so the layout of the par-72 course also ensures that it plays longer than it actually looks.

Bush condemns violence after bombing

JERUSALEM -- A suicide bomber blew himself up on a bus in Jerusalem on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people and wounding nearly 70, police said. An hour later, an Israeli helicopter fired missiles at a car in Gaza City, killing two Hamas officials and at least five other people. President Bush condemned the Jerusalem bombing, which came after the Islamic militant group vowed revenge for a missile attack Tuesday that wounded a senior Hamas political leader.

Daniels' run for governor begins

Program helps low-income houses stay cool

Despite the summer heat, residents of Brown, Owen, Morgan and Monroe counties are staying cool this season with the help of the Summer Cooling Assistance Program. Run by South Central Community Action, Summer Cooling is also part of the Energy Assistance Program, which strives to offset the high cost of heating in the winter and cooling in the summer.

'Happy Street Children' of Europe

Following the Sept. 11 attacks, news anchors, college freshmen and others have repeated the mantra, "everything has changed" -- often with vacant expressions befitting pod people or the folks at the airport who try to sell you tulips. In some cases, this phrase is true (U.S. foreign policy), in other cases it is mostly bull (national unity). But one thing showing repercussions is the decrease in Americans traveling abroad. The threat of being drafted into the choir immortal, a weak dollar, unfriendly demonstrations and the expense and the misery that is commercial airline travel have all combined to keep us home twiddling our thumbs. Or, rather, to keep you twiddling. Me, I'm in Strasbourg, on the French side of the Franco-German border. And while here, I'm gathering info on the European scene in order to help prepare you and other Americans to return to the continent. Thus, for this week, we'll start with a useful skill: blending in.

Bush urges a stop in financial support

CHICAGO -- President Bush deplored Wednesday's bus bombing in Jerusalem and urged all nations to block financial assistance to the Palestinian militant group Hamas and similar organizations and "isolate those who hate so much that they are willing to kill to stop peace."

Cleveland: The New American City

Though six and a half hours might seem like a long drive, it is well worth your while to visit Ohio's second largest city, Cleveland. Known as "The New American City," Cleveland is the 30th largest city in the United States and has the seventh fastest-growing downtown area. But these are all just numbers. To really experience this city, make sure you have a couple of good CDs and hop in the car.

Signs from God

While driving back to IU from a Memorial Day weekend in Michigan (and I'd like to point out that Memorial Day weekend is kind of an oxymoron), I saw a sign on State Road 37 that caught my attention. On a big black billboard were the words, "Looking for a sign from God?" Not more than a hundred feet beyond it was another black sign that said, "God Rules!" I was confused and amused. If God actually did put the "God Rules" sign up, don't you think he's a little arrogant? I mean sure, maybe he created the world, but that's no reason to put himself on such a high and mighty pedestal. I love myself, but I'd never put a sign up along a highway that says "Brad rules." OK, maybe in the cover of darkness I would, but that's not the point. Also, why is God talking in the third person? Does he always talk like this? Does God go to Wendy's and say, "God would like a Big Bacon Classic"? It just isn't adding up for me.

Treasures of Nimrud found

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The world-famous treasures of Nimrud, unaccounted for since Baghdad fell two months ago, have been located in good condition in the country's Central Bank -- in a secret vault-inside-a-vault submerged in sewage water, U.S. occupation authorities said Saturday.

Take or leave Lennie's Brewpub

Senate Bill No. 534 should be supported

Indiana Senate Bill No. 534, proposed early this year by Sen. Glenn Howard of Indianapolis, seeks to make amendments to the Indiana Code dealing with human services. More explicitly, the bill, if passed, will add "sexual orientation" to a list of other signifying factors, including race, religion, color, national origin, sex and age. These factors attest to an individual's civil rights under Indiana law.

Physicists tackle new project

Members of the IU physics department are just now finishing the first stage of work on a massive, multi-national science endeavor known as ATLAS. ATLAS is the name of a yet to be constructed, multi-purpose detector for particle physicists to observe the behavior of high energy proton collisions. When completed in 2007, the cylindrical ATLAS Detector will be five stories high and weigh 7,000 tons.

A-Rod out of lineup

Funny Cide fails in Triple try, Empire Maker takes Belmont
