Debating in D.C.

·

A few years ago, as a high school junior, I spent the summer in Washington, D.C. While there, I was a page in the U.S. Senate. As a page, I got to witness first-hand the debates and actions the Senate takes on a daily basis.

La Casa celebrates 30th anniversary of support

·

IU can be an intimidating place if people of your culture only make up 2 percent of the student population. This is the situation for many Latino students at IU and one the Latino Cultural Center wants to help alleviate.

Undercover operations: uncovered

·

Stings, pigeons and moles. The work of undercover police officers is typically a secret within the halls of a police department, but at noon today, Paul Marcus, Haynes Professor of Law at Virginia's College of William and Mary, will uncover the myths in his lecture, "Undercover Law Enforcement Operations: Word from the street, the police station and the courthouse."

Ticketmaster strikes again

·

When you strip away the Recording Industry Association of America's inquisition of 12 year olds, record companies' pursuit of an easy buck and Clear Channel Communication's attempt to rule the proverbial world, you remain with the only pure musical experience left: the concert.

Ex-sorority becomes home for technology

·

The building at the corner of 10th Street and Woodlawn Avenue is one of the most newly renovated structures on campus. But the property has a storied legacy. The School of Informatics, 901 E. 10th St., was renovated after it was bought two years ago from the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.

Restructuring makes sense

·

In this corner, weighing in at an undisclosed number of pounds, wearing the crimson trunks, IU-Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Brehm.

IU community confers about presidential race

·

There may be more than a year before the 2004 presidential election, but the race is already heating up. Newly announced Democratic candidate Gen. Wesley Clark and President George W. Bush are leading recent polls. IU College Republicans President Angel Rivera said he thinks the race will be determined by the two issues that have been at the top of the nation's list in recent years -- the economy and national defense. In the months directly following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent military action in Afghanistan, Bush enjoyed high approval ratings.

Groups team up for adventure

·

Two of Bloomington's biggest outdoor activity organizers, Bloomington Parks and Recreation and IU Outdoor Adventures, have teamed up to provide the chance to expand opportunities for IU students and members of the Bloomington community. The groups have come together for the first time to sponsor two fall outdoor adventure trips they hope will reach IU students and Bloomington community members alike. The first joint excursion on Sept. 19-21 was filled to capacity, and leaders are already looking forward to a good turnout for their next joint venture. Seven people have already signed up for Whitewater Canoeing on the Cumberland River, Ky., scheduled for October 17-19. The registration deadline is Oct. 10.

The sun shines dimly in Tuscany

·

The theme of Under the Tuscan Sun is universal. The film shows the viewer that there is life after suffering a great loss. Most importantly, it exhibits the significance of taking chances, allowing the rest to fall into place.

Cancel my reservations at the Hilton

·

Now I confess, in my downtime I, like most, enjoy the chance to take some time and zone out in front of that little black box which can be traced to the decline of our generation -- the TV.

Bryan Adams sucks- Am I going to Hell?

·

A few weeks ago I was trying not to laugh at my friend as she explained some of the details of her newfound pagan religion. I suppose I should have been more supportive, but because of my total intolerance of anyone different than me I found it difficult.

Sicko? Maybe. R&B Legend? Definitely.

·

Maybe it's just contributing to the "Keep-R.-Kelly-Out-of-Jail" fund, but the R. in R&B Collection, Volume 1 is a must-have for anyone who's ever lived a memory to an R. Kelly song. And who hasn't danced to an R. Kelly song at a junior high dance or raised their voice at every party last spring when the remix to "Ignition" came on?

Why two is better than one

·

Andre "3000" Benjamin and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton took rap music to a level that not even the godfathers of rap could ever imagine. It was 1994 when these rap artists busted onto the scene with their debut album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.

New Peacock drama is one big Caan job

·

For a drama-filled Monday night line-up, "Las Vegas" heats up the scene with a fast-paced lifestyle, interesting plot and a beautiful cast. The show follows Danny McCoy (Josh Duhamel), an ex-Marine who serves as a surveillance expert for a Las Vegas casino.

'Duplex' built on shaky foundation

·

Built on a slightly shaky foundation, Duplex does have its funny moments, but overall it's a fixer upper. Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore star as Alex and Nancy, a couple who move into this seemingly perfect duplex in Brooklyn.

EVEN IF IT'S TOO LATE FOR THE TEAM...

·

Rumor has it that IU tailgates don't live up to those found on other Big Ten campuses like Purdue or Michigan. A close friend from high school might tell you, "Man, we had the most out of control tailgate last weekend! I can't remember the last time I had so much fun at the game!"

Drive fast, turn left

·

Playing EA Sports' Nascar Thunder 2004 for only a moment reveals it as an attempt to keep the die-hard racing fans happy and still entertain the everyday video game player. The game itself is a fast-paced, action-packed racer that is graphically superior to others in its class. Some new features in this year's game include a draft function and the grudge and alliance feature.

Rock On

·

For some time now, America has been without a good, bankable action hero. The '80s and early '90s were the heyday of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford and even Bruce Willis, along with their friends Glock, Smith & Wesson and Colt.
