Events planned for World AIDS Day

ROME -- Candlelight vigils, educational seminars and torchlight parades were planned around the globe today to mark World AIDS Day, while a U.S. delegation headed to hard-hit Africa to urge its leaders to increase awareness about the deadly virus.

New fee's purpose reviewed

Freshman Emily Hanover doesn't worry about the cost of an IU education that much. After all, she doesn't have to pay for her time here -- her parents take care of that. However, even she knows that it puts a little more of a burden on her family because they now have to pay an extra $1,000 fee every year she attends IU. "I really don't think about the fee that much since I don't actually foot the bills, but I'm sure my dad thinks about it," Hanover said.

Convicted sniper may testify in accomplice's trial

CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Convicted sniper mastermind John Allen Muhammad could find himself in another courtroom this week, this time as a witness in the trial of his alleged partner in crime, an 18-year-old who sees him as a father figure. Lee Boyd Malvo's lawyers have asubpoenaed Muhammad and plan to call him to the stand this week.

Students to participate in events for World AIDS Day

IU's Student Global AIDS Campaign chapter will participate in World AIDS Day today in order to enhance education and awareness of the disease. Five hundred luminaries will be lit today from Third Street to Indiana Avenue and then around Dunn Meadow to memorialize victims of AIDS. Some of these luminaries will have individual names of AIDS victims written on them.

IU researchers who examined tax records found more than 2,100 millionaires across the state, with the greatest concentration in the Indianapolis area. IU's Indiana Business Research Center and Kelley School of Business released findings Monday from the study and a report which found Indiana is more dependent on property and individual income taxes than other states.

Myanmarian government rebuilds ancient temple

Defying an international outcry, Myanmar's military rulers have begun building a nearly 200-foot-tall viewing tower in the midst of the ancient temple city of Bagan, one of Asia's greatest archaeological sites. The project is adding to the severe criticism already heaped on Myanmar's junta for its allegedly unplanned and inaccurate rebuilding of many ruins and its record in general of suppressing human rights and democracy.

Show benefits AIDS awareness

Beyoncé Knowles, Bono, Peter Gabriel and other musicians from around the world took to the stage Saturday for an AIDS benefit concert hosted by former South African President Nelson Mandela. The concert will be screened globally by MTV on World AIDS Day Monday. More than 30,000 people, among them Oprah Winfrey and other celebrities, filled Cape Town's Greenpoint Stadium for the show, part of Mandela's 46664 campaign to fight AIDS, named after his number when he was imprisoned for his fight against apartheid.

Indiana residents use Internet to avoid shopping mall crowds

INDIANAPOLIS -- Malls were packed Friday as shoppers kicked off the holiday shopping season, but a growing number of Indiana residents are avoiding crowds and traffic jams altogether by shopping online from home. A recent America Online survey ranked Indianapolis seventh in a list of cities that spend the most online. Last year, Indianapolis ranked 26th.

Hoosiers down UNC-G 71-64 in season opener
