IU defeats Penn State

·

Until late in the second half Wednesday night, the IU men’s basketball team was shooting at a higher percentage in contested 3-point shots than on free throws.

The rise of the casual racist

·

I don’t know if I’ve actually witnessed more racism lately, or if I’m just more attuned to it as I mature. But in the past two or so months, I’ve seen a spike in “casual racism,” a term I’ve been using to encompass racist behaviors or observations disguised as humor or cheeky, post-racial sarcasm.

Bisexual bias

·

I’ve had a saying for a few years now. Bisexuals are like unicorns. You really want them to exist. But they just don’t. And there are a lot of people who won’t give up hope.

Vouchers

Help, don't hurt public schools

The more money that is funneled into private school tuition, the more public school districts suffer. The money lost means fewer teachers, larger classes and inferior resources. These are among the issues that plague public schools in the first place.

Guillermo del Toro presents: Mama

·

The film draws heavily from ghostly J-horror — “Mama’s” twisted maternal psychology, jerky body-horror, clicking vocal effects and cold color palette — but rarely unnerves as a creature feature.

Local Natives: Hummingbird

·

Constipated emotional payoff, whether through the melodies or through the lyrics, is a constant theme of “Hummingbird” and one the listener sees mirrored on the track’s latter half.

Foxygen

Foxygen: We are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic

·

After receiving Pitchfork’s title of Best New Track for “No Destruction,” Foxygen set a high bar for themselves to meet. This duo lets their laidback California attitudes shine through on this nine-track album and proves that 2013 may have potential to live up to the standards set by 2012.

Which racist are you?

·

Racism directed at Asians, often specifically the Chinese, comes in a plethora of forms I have identified across the IU campus.

Cutting costs at the new IU

·

IU has been relying on its students for funding like never before. With tuition and fees providing a majority of IU’s revenues, the University has been trying to attract competitive nonresidents, as described in the Nov. 6 BFC meeting as IU’s “golden goose,” and charging them triple the rates of in-state students.

Party rap's tyrannical reign over hip-hop

·

Party rap is very much a part of the fabric of hip hop, and shouldn’t be completely discounted. The problem arises when the only rap in the mainstream is party rap, selling images of ignorance, decadence, drug and alcohol abuse, crime, and misogyny.

Gay-bama

·

From withholding the Westboro Baptist Church, to nominating seven openly gay candidates for federal bench, to “don’t ask, don’t tell,” to the first presidential endorsement of same-sex marriage, President Obama has done a whole lot of LGBT “firsts.”

Hip-hop started out in the heart

·

One of the biggest complaints about today’s mainstream rap from the underground scene and hip hop heads is that it is shallow and has strayed too far from its roots.
