Junior midfielder displays wide array of talent

Ryan Mack winds up his arm and throws a little soccer ball into the stands before a match. Mack follows the toss with a huge, childish grin as he watches spectators scramble for the ball. He then sprints onto the field for the kickoff and usually clowns around with a teammate. Prior to Sunday's Michigan game, Mack jumped up and down, trying to knock over sophomore midfielder Pat Noonan.

I have proof! America finally embraces soccer

The scene was set: thousands of screaming fans, flags waving all over the place, rhythms being blasted throughout the arena ... If you said a Skynard concert, good guess. Probably what I would have said too. But you're wrong. It was Crew Stadium Wednesday night. And it was then and there when I realized I had finally become a true soccer fanatic.

Runners look for bids to championship

The men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Ames, Iowa this weekend to take on a majority of the top 25 teams in the Pre-NCAA Invitational. This meet gives the teams a chance to test the course before the NCAA Championships are held there Nov. 20.

Volleyball seeks end to losing streak

The volleyball team has an opportunity to jump start its season this weekend as it takes on Illinois and Purdue at home. All three teams are 1-5 in conference play.

Crew holds Lemon Head Regatta

Team chemistry, rigorous training and two successful races starting the season culminate this Saturday when the crew team plays host to the Lemon Head Regatta at Lake Lemon. In only its second year of varsity status, crew has posted strong results in the first two races of the year. Senior co-captain Katy Ostertag said she is very upbeat about her team's current performance.

Dow Jones plummet hurts Home Depot stock

Amid Middle East violence and the bombing of Navy destroyer USS Cole, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted almost 400 points yesterday in the fifth-biggest point drop in history. Analysts pointed to turmoil abroad as the cause, but Thursday's stock activity continued a month-long slide in stock prices.

Time to change traditional debates

During the first presidential debate Oct. 3, the candidates engaged in a sparring match of sound-bytes. But Wednesday's debate featured the candidates discussing issues in a more focused, serious manner. The only difference between the two debates was the format. This difference highlighted the need to change from the more traditional format.

Vote against the lies

Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore was recently in Las Vegas to accept the endorsement of the Teamsters union. While this alone is pretty mundane, what occurred during his acceptance speech should raise some serious questions for the voting public.

A choice, not just genetics

Then gay Olympic gold medal winner Greg Louganis spoke at IU in1997, he told a pro-gay audience, "I'm a firm believer that you're born this way; it's not a decision," and received a rousing ovation. This is a slogan, a pledge of allegiance intended to rouse an emotional response, not a statement of fact. It's also false and misleading.

Wyclef to headline hip-hop lineup

Fishbone funks up Axis

Fishbone is a funk band that has been around for about 20 years, put out about five albums and played with George Clinton and the Red Hot Chile Peppers. In other words, it has all-around good credentials. They played at Axis, 419 N. Walnut Ave., Wednesday night.

Civic Theater brings Moliere to town

The noted French playwright Moliere had a macabre sense of humor. When he started work on "The Imaginary Invalid" in the winter of 1672, he had been struggling with a chronic, hacking cough for years. He knew he was dying.

WFIU clears half-century mark

Sept. 30, 1950 marked a special occasion for the Bloomington campus. It was the birth of a radio station, WFIU 103.7 FM. During October, the station will promote several special events to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Students run to remember friend

For many participating in Saturday's Hoosiers Outrun Cancer, the event offers a chance to get together with friends and family to celebrate the life of a former IU student who lost his battle with cancer in April. Craig Sowder had been at IU for two years before he died of angiosarcoma six months ago. During his time in Bloomington he made a lasting impact on those he met.

Forum discusses multiculturalism

Senior Katherine Chilcote asked the administration to "catch up with us." As a representative of the Disabled Student Association, Chilcote said she was disappointed with the way IU's administration handles diversity and multiculturalism and its related issues on campus.

Science building proposal under review

An initial proposal to build an about $60 million Multidisciplinary Science Building (MSB), designed to run the latest technology for scientific research, is currently under review by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education. If the commission makes a positive recommendation, the proposal will be included with other capital requests IU will submit to the General Assembly.

Student finds success as DJ

It's not often one comes across a college student with his own successful business. Sam Souhrada has been the operator for the Bloomington DJ Services, his own branch of Pole Vault Productions. Having begun the business simply for fun by doing several birthday parties, Souhrada has now built an up-and-coming business over the past five years.
