The usually overcrowded eateries are closed and the phenomenon of strangely-contorted sleeping students on Mezzanine-level couches is on hold until the next morning. The Union is quiet on Sunday nights, unless the IU Ballroom Dance Club is out to bring in new members.

Credit card companies dangle freebies to attract students

Credit card companies and financial institutions are descending on campus in hopes of convincing freshmen to sign up for their services. In an effort to tempt students, some are throwing in gifts, such as an iPod, T-shirt or other freebies.  Jerry James, a senior finance lecturer in the Kelley School of Business, said students need to look beyond the allure of giveaways.

Ice hockey team holds call-out

The 2008-09 IU men’s club ice hockey team will host three call-out meetings in September at the Pan American Plaza Skating Rink in Indianapolis. “The meetings help establish which guys we will place on the ice when we get to games,” said IU coach Tom Orr. Last season proved to be successful for the team, as they made it to the Division II National Championship game before falling to Davenport University.

More than 50 kick off Hispanic heritage month

IU kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month on Monday at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures where more than 50 people of all races, ages and occupations banded together to celebrate and support Bloomington’s Hispanic community.

Emergency Medical Technicians to be housed in McNutt

For the first time, student emergency medical technicians will be stationed at a campus dormitory on weekends so they can quickly respond to emergencies. The IU Emergency Medical Service club will put student EMTs at the McNutt Residence Center from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. The volunteers will act as first responders to treat students who are injured or intoxicated.

There’s more to the Dallas Stars’ new left wing Sean Avery than meets the eye. In the hockey world, he is infamous. He is known as the NHL’s No. 1 “bad boy,” as opposing players voted him the NHL’s most hated player of 2007 in “The Hockey News”. The reasoning? He has had numerous arguments with coaches and teammates, and he has a reputation for consistently being near the top of the league in penalty minutes.

Something for every student

Ranging from the tall, muscular senior Owen Dickey to the slim, witty sophomore William Peabody to the everyday senior Brian Pike, club sports at IU host a variety of interests and styles. For these three students, each has found a passion. Dickey participates in rugby, while Peabody is an active participant in rowing and Pike practices hapkido. “(Club sports) are an excellent program,” said Pike, the hapkido club’s president. “It’s a great opportunity for students to try something new and exciting.”
