Making sense of the madness

·

Hopefully those of us making predictions for this weekend’s Final Four matchups will fare a little better than we have up to this point. According to ESPN, roughly 200 out of 4.8 million brackets in the network’s bracket challenge correctly selected all four teams playing this weekend. Keeping our fingers crossed, let’s take a look at the games slated for Saturday.

Butler celebrates 1st Final Four

·

The school that never celebrates midnight madness to kick off the basketball season finally held a late-night campus party. Sunday morning’s March Madness bash was even better.

Butler did it, beats KSU 63-56 to make Final Four

·

The boys from Butler did it — defeating Kansas State 63-56 in the West Regional final Saturday to make their trip back home something much bigger than that. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs, the team that plays in the fieldhouse where "Hoosiers" was filmed, are writing their own underdog story, even if they can't really be called underdogs anymore.

Butler rallies to beat top-seeded Syracuse 63-59

Now, after reaching the regional finals for the first time in school history, Butler is one win from going home to Indianapolis for the Final Four. The Bulldogs next play second-seeded Kansas State, which beat Xavier 101-96 in double overtime.

Keep March mad, not bizarre by staying with 65-team tournament

·

In the midst of the dancing shoes and excessive Cinderella slippers this year, I’d like to throw one suggestion — a plea, rather — to athletics directors, presidents, NCAA officials and others having influence regarding the format of the Division I postseason: For all that we love about this great month and the college hardwood, don’t expand to 96 teams.

Crean hits recruiting trail

·

While Purdue, Butler and Notre Dame prepare for tournament games and a chance to play for the championship in their home state, Indiana is on spring break with no place to go.

Northwestern buries IU in first-round loss

·

For the entire 2009-2010 season, IU has been behind. Like a lagging runner, the Hoosiers have never been able to catch up to their Big Ten rivals, the teams they must measure up to if they have any hope of returning to glory.

End of season marks critical time for Hoosiers

·

IU closed its 2009-2010 campaign on Thursday. It was a year in which IU improved by four games and completed its second season under coach Tom Crean with a 10-21 record. There were highs and there were lows. But with each game, inch by inch, the team made progress.

IU repeats old mistakes in season-ender

·

The season came to an end in IU’s 73-58 loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament. And while the Hoosiers played 30 games before Thursday’s matchup, the same problems remained.

Hoosiers lose to Northwestern, 73-58

It’s been another down season for the IU men’s basketball team, and now it’s officially done. The Hoosiers fell to the Northwestern Wildcats 73-58 on Thursday at Conseco Fieldhouse. With the win, Northwestern moves on to play Purdue tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.

IU focuses on deep ball in third meeting with Northwestern

·

The Hoosiers will be well versed in the Wildcats’ play when they see the team for the second time in such a short span. But there’s one thing IU knows Northwestern won’t change when the two teams play in the Big Ten Tournament’s first round at 5 p.m. Thursday: its volume of 3-point attempts.

Quick turnaround could pose problems for Hoosiers

·

In its final regular season game against Northwestern last Saturday, IU managed to scrape out an 88-80 win in overtime. The Hoosiers will look to use the same methods that got them the Senior Day victory in the Big Ten Tournament’s opening round in a rematch with the Wildcats today.
