Big Ten greatness relies on trip to Michigan; a four-game series

It's not common for entire seasons to revolve around only the third series on the conference schedule. But IU's campaign for Big Ten greatness relies on a successful trip to East Lansing this weekend.

Going for first Big Ten win

Having split both of its doubleheaders this week, the IU softball team goes into this weekend's competition against Illinois and Purdue in search of its first win in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers head to Illinois (23-16, 3-5 Big Ten) tonight for a 6 p.m. game. IU (11-21-1, 0-8) and the Illini will also battle at noon Saturday in Champaign, Ill. The Hoosiers then travel to West Lafayette to take on rival Purdue (29-15, 0-6) in a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday.

Living at home isn't that bad

Imagine this: You come home from your boyfriend's house Sunday evening and your roommates are in the kitchen eating dinner. Your plate is prepared and warming in the oven. You finish eating and try to help clear the table, but one of your roommates scolds, "Go do your homework!" As you head to your room, your roommates settle in front of the television. The "Lawrence Welk Show" theme music follows you up the stairs. This is my life.

Happy Birthday Mom

When my mom turned 45, I told her she was halfway to 90. When she turned 48, I told her, "Nice job, you are halfway to 96." Today she turns 50, and I could be original and say, "Way to go, you're half a century old." Instead, I'm going to say, "Congratulations." The more I think about it, the more she should be praised for what she's been through in her 50 years.

O'Bannon blew it with education

Next year, IU students will once again face a tuition increase. It's easy to get caught up in finger-pointing about who is to blame for such increases. But this year, no such confusion is necessary. The fault lies in the lap of the Indiana General Assembly and Gov. Frank O'Bannon.

IUSF making poor decisions

The IU Student Foundation is, once again, considering reversing a decision regarding the eligibility of men's Little 500 third-place qualifier Team Major Taylor. IUSF has failed to apply the rules fairly across the board for all teams.

The IU Police Department reported the following activity: April 5 • Nonstudent Andrew L. Deloney, 48, resident of Ralston Drive, was arrested at Tenth and Dunn streets for public intoxication. He was transported to Monroe County Jail. • Senior Brian J. Landrum, 22, resident of East 14th Street, was arrested and transported to Monroe County Jail after he vandalized a walkway light in Peoples' Park. Estimated damage is $200.

Job, internship market tight

Susan Hamilton is a scholar. A senior and member of the Kelley School of Business Honors Program, Hamilton worked her way through the school's marketing program in three-and-a-half years, only dropping one class and maintaining above a 3.5 every semester. Every morning, the buzz of who would be coming in that day flew through the Hollywood office building. Every day is someone new, a different celebrity dropping by, perhaps to discuss another multi-million dollar contract for his or her next movie or television stunt. The agent, the behind-the-scenes negotiator of the large revenues that the entertainment industry brings in every year, is the important person these stars came to see.

Former state trooper sentenced to 195 years

Council debates fiber-optic plan

The Bloomington City Council entertained a proposal Wednesday night that would complete a fiber-optic cable loop that runs south from downtown Bloomington throughout the city. The project is known as the Bloomington Digital Underground Project.

City program starts 2 classes

The city of Bloomington is offering two new classes through the Division of Parks and Recreations' "People's University." The People's University is an adult learning program offered by the city to promote continued education in the community in a casual environment. ENIN, West Bank -- From a West Bank army base overlooking the scene of the deadliest fighting in Israel's 13-day-old offensive, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday delivered a blunt message: Israel will not pull back until Palestinian militias are crushed. Despite his pledge to continue the offensive in the face of intense U.S. and international pressure to call it off, Sharon's defense ministry announced late Wednesday troops were pulling out of West Bank villages of Yatta, Qabatya and Samua.

Students protest RA firings
