The Indiana Geological Survey, an institute of IU, was awarded a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation so it can create a computer-based atlas for the state. The Geographic Information System is an atlas of digital maps that gives information on various geology topics, such as geologic features, mineral resources and areas of environmental sensitivity. This information is then put together, producing a specialized map.

Scholarship honors memory of slain student

Two students will receive scholarships honoring the memory of slain IU student Won-Joon Yoon at this afternoon's award banquet. Won-Joon Yoon was a graduate student in the school of education when he was murdered in the summer of 1999. The shooting took place in front of the Korean Methodist Church, 1924 E. Third St., over the Fourth of July weekend.

Students' cars collide, SUV rolls

An automobile wreck Thursday evening involving two IU students left a hefty cleanup for police and fire units and two students shaken by the incident. IUPD Officer Shannon Bunger was dispatched to the scene at 7:54 p.m.

Golfers get final pre-conference tune-up

This weekend marks the culmination of a season that began in early September. The men's golf team travels to East Lansing, Mich., to participate in the Bruce Fossum/Taylor Made Invitational played host to by Michigan State.

Michigan stands in way of victory

Michigan has won five titles this year in tournaments in which the IU women's golf team has competed. This weekend, the Hoosiers are hoping to overcome Michigan's dominating season in the tournament that matters most. All of the Big Ten schools compete today through Sunday in the conference tournament in Champaign, Ill.

First-round loss ends tourney early at Big Tens

The IU men's tennis team couldn't quite get the job done against No. 6 Michigan at the Big Ten Championships Thursday. The No. 11 Hoosiers lost 4-2 in Columbus, Ohio, at the Stickney Tennis Center. Senior Milan Rakvica won at the No. 1 position for IU, beating the Wolverines' Henry Beam 7-6(2), 6-4.

ST. LOUIS -- Even though Brent Johnson's shutout streak came to an end, the St. Louis Blues advanced to the second round of the NHL playoffs with a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 5 on Thursday night.

Conference fate might lie on series

The Hoosiers head to Minnesota this weekend for a crucial series with the Golden Gophers. IU needs to win the four-game series to stay close to first-place Ohio State, which has a two-game lead over IU and Michigan State. The Hoosiers and Spartans are 9-6 in conference, and Minnesota follows in fourth place with one less win.

Search for first conference win continues

Going into its final weekend of Big Ten competition, the IU softball team is still in search of its first win in conference play. The Hoosiers play host to both Penn State and Ohio State for two games apiece this weekend.

Track teams off to big meets

The last weekend in April is an important time for the IU track and field teams. The men will be attending two meets, while the women attend three. Both teams will travel to the Drake Relays in Iowa and the Purdue Relays, and the women are also attending the Penn Relays. The Penn Relays is one of the biggest meets of the year. Talented athletes from all over the country come to compete. It isn't only a collegiate meet, either. The best high school runners in the country and relay teams from around the world also compete.

Bush welcomes Saudi prince to ranch

CRAWFORD, Texas -- Amid the serenity of rustling grasses, President Bush and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah confronted the rising tensions over Israel, Iraq and Islamic terror that are straining their nations' 70-year alliance. The leaders met Thursday at Bush's ranch home with a formality he normally leaves at the Texas state line.

Columnist Cherry Blattert claimed the protesters in Dunn Meadow are "anti-American" ("An open letter to Dean McKaig," April 23). This claim is absolutely ridiculous. Radical demonstrators and protesters founded America. I, for one, enjoy the fact that we are no longer ruled by England.

Dead week not so dead

This semester has been so bad I issued a warning to myself scrawled across my planner in bright red letters: "LOOK AT NEXT WEEK!!!". I have two papers and two exams to contend with, one after another, and I didn't want them sneaking up on me. All of that work adds up to one brutal week. Granted, not an impossible week, but my personal stress-meter is in the red nonetheless.

EVANSVILLE -- A handful of Indiana airports have teamed up to recruit an intrastate airline. Airport directors in Evansville, Gary, South Bend, Lafayette and Terre Haute have each agreed to pay $8,000 to $9,000 for grant application preparation fees in hopes of obtaining federal funding to attract an airline.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration used Indianapolis on Thursday as a starting point for a cross-country tour focusing on methamphetamine abuse. Authorities say the city a hub for transporting the illegal drug across the nation.

The audience had the chance to leave its troubles outside with the pouring rain Wednesday night, as the touring company of "Cabaret" put on a show that was worthy of the high standards set by the Broadway revival.

IU musical group releases CD

Most of Bloomington has probably heard of Straight No Chaser, but many may not have seen the group perform. Those not familiar with the group's work will get their chance Saturday at the IU Auditorium, where SNC will perform its spring CD release concert at 8 p.m.

Alum awarded $15,000

IU alumnus Twyla Robinson, a soprano, has been named among the winners of the Metropolitan Opera Competition. The competition, which began in October 2001, involved several thousand students from Canada, the United States and Australia. District, regional, semifinal and final competition narrowed the field to 10 competitors for the award. Five people were awarded this year.
