Hoosiers go undefeated in exhibition

So far, so good for new women's soccer coach Mick Lyon. The Hoosiers tied Valparaiso in their first action of the year last Wednesday and defeated IU-Purdue University Fort Wayne 6-1 Saturday. Although both games were exhibitions, they provided Lyon some insight into the make-up of a team buoyed by a new coaching staff and featuring eight freshman players.

Teams start scrapping Thursday flights in preparation for strike

NEW YORK -- While baseball negotiators intensified their meetings in hopes of completing a deal, teams began pushing back travel plans to prepare for a possible strike Friday. The Chicago White Sox called off their Thursday charter to Detroit and said they would travel Friday only if there isn't a walkout. Boston rescheduled its charter to Cleveland for Friday, too, but St. Louis will travel Thursday for the following day's game at the Chicago Cubs, which would be the first game affected by a strike.

Team downs Cavs, tie Cats in preseason

After being tabbed No. 1 in two different preseason college soccer rankings, the IU men's soccer team traveled to the Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Soccer Showcase in Fort Wayne last weekend to take on Kentucky and Virginia in a pair of exhibition games. IU was ranked No. 1 by both the College Soccer News and the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America in their rankings released earlier this month.

IU unveils its new look for fall season

After months of research and surveys by the Athletic Department, the university unveiled IU's new colors and logos last spring. Monday, the new uniforms for IU's athletic teams with the new looks were unveiled at a Varsity Club event held in Indianapolis. The athletic department has gone back to the old cream and crimson and the block IU symbol. Athletic Director Michael McNeely said the new logo was the most recognizable icon by fans of IU and its athletics.

Jones named team's starter

IU football fans may have grown accustomed to watching Antwaan Randle El hurdle, juke and shuffle as the most prolific quarterback in IU history. But along with new uniforms, fans will get a new style of quarterback starting Saturday when senior Tommy Jones lines up under center. The stand-up pocket passer was named IU's starting quarterback for the Hoosiers opener Saturday against William & Mary.

Ally aircraft bomb Iraqi military target

A U.S.-British air raid in southern Iraq this weekend destroyed a major military surveillance site that monitors American troops in the Persian Gulf, witnesses said Tuesday. The Iraqi military said the allied warplanes on Sunday bombed areas in Basra province, 330 miles south of Baghdad, killing eight civilians and wounding nine others.

Men missing since 9/11 found

NEW YORK-- Two men listed for months as missing in the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center have been discovered alive in area hospitals, city officials said Tuesday. In addition, the city medical examiner\'s office said a revised list of the missing and dead is expected to reflect at least five similar cases when it is released next week.

Trustees set fall stage

In the first meeting of the new academic school year, the IU Board of Trustees laid the foundation for the upcoming year. The Aug. 15 meeting was highlighted by electing current trustees to new positions: Frederick Eichhorn as president and Stephen Ferguson as vice president.

Indiana SAT scores improve, still below national average

SAT scores for the high school graduating class of 2002 in Indiana improved by one point over last year but were still below the national average, according to figures released Tuesday. It marked the third straight year Indiana's cumulative score in math proficiency and the language portion of the college entrance test improved by one point. Nationally, a two-point increase in math was offset by a two-point decrease in language.

Dissent builds with I-69 proposal

Hoosiers have sent hundreds of e-mails commenting on the proposed Interstate 69 project and turned out en masse to sometimes-heated public hearings on the subject. Dozens of others have mailed letters with their opinion on whether the highway from Evansville to Indianapolis should be built, and if so, where it should run, said Michael Grovak, study project manager with state consultant Bernardin, Lochmueller & Associates Inc.

Off-campus housing offers alternative to dorm life

Flipping through classified ads is only the start for students in need of a place to live. The search for off-campus housing will lead to many options. Angie Stewart, property manager for the University Commons apartment complex, 1150 Clarizz Blvd., said living off campus is more like home than living on campus.

George W. Bush should take all necessary political precautions when heading into what could be a long war against Iraq. Most White House administration officials and lawmakers say Bush doesn't need congressional approval for heading into a war, citing the 1991 Persian Gulf resolution, which allowed his father, former President Bush, to send troops to fight Iraqis when they invaded Kuwait.

I need to see your ID, please. That's the phrase on the mouth of every bouncer in Bloomington, and it's the phrase that keeps underage students out of Bloomington's bar and club scene. Those without proper identification often have to look elsewhere for evening entertainment. Sarah Haynes, a sophomore, has suffered through this government-enforced restriction.
