Letters from Abroad

·

BOLOGNA, Italy – You might have just finished a five-page thesis for your topics class. Or maybe you have spent countless hours preparing for your graphic design portfolio review or re-learning reagents and reviewing old synthesis problems for organic chemistry.

Far from Mayberry

·

This place has that small-town feel, ambient whistling and is also a place where everyone knows everyone else’s names. It may sound like Mayberry – the perfect community – but as soon as the play begins, the audience soon realizes this town is full of secrets, cautious whispers and “incidents” that happen with every wrong move against a powerful resident.

Wishing ‘n’ wanting

·

All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth,” or so goes the old holiday jingle, covered by such renowned performers as Mariah Carey, George Strait and Alvin and the Chipmunks. Gosh, I love Christmas. There are few holidays around, religious or national, that have the ability to bring together groups as eclectic as Strait, Carey and the other performers mentioned above – furry and potentially rabid woodland creatures.

That’s my Bush!

·

President Bush must be kind of lonely these days. His staff and aides are jumping ship like mad, and rather than embrace the incumbent’s legacy, the entire Republican field is invoking Reagan, not Bush. I hardly need to mention the torrents of criticism that Democrats are heaping upon Bush and his historically low approval ratings.

Until we meet again

·

It seems appropriate to me that the day I would write my final column would be a gloomy, rainy day in December because I am certainly gloomy and tearful now as I pen my goodbye. This position that I have cherished has been the defining pillar of my life during the last tumultuous year and a half, the constant that has kept me grounded in existential reality. No matter what personal disaster or health crisis or academic demands rattled up my world, no matter where in the world I found myself, I could always count on that same weekly deadline; it has been the one comforting constant. You, gentle readers, have provided me with that gift, and I am so thankful.

A Plea to Feminists

·

I speak to college activists when I say: In these coming months as we decide which presidential candidate to vote for, please, I beg of you, do not vote on one issue. To be more specific: Feminists – my comrades – don’t vote for Hillary Clinton just because she’s a woman and pro-choice. This is an appeal from my heart. While an undergraduate student, I was heavily involved in feminist activist groups on IU’s campus.

Psyched out

On Friday, members of the IU community and concerned Bloomington residents were given the opportunity to talk with Sharon Brehm, IU professor of psychology and president of the American Psychological Association. Recently, the American Psychological Association passed internal legislation concerning the involvement of psychologists in government interrogation. While the resolution condemned all types of torture, it did not include a proposed section about eliminating the presence of psychologists in government interrogation as a form of protest against interrogation techniques. According to some in human rights circles, Brehm herself was an opponent against this section.

Tempe temptation: Hoosiers headed for the Insight Bowl

·

40-year-old man or not, the Hoosiers are coming after Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State. In case you’ve been trapped under The Rock following the on-field Old Oaken Bucket celebration, the Hoosiers and Cowboys will spend New Year’s Eve playing in the Insight Bowl in Tempe, Ariz.

Hoosiers fall to No. 21 Florida State in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

·

Missed free-throws will drive any basketball coach crazy. After the IU women’s basketball team’s 85-78 loss to No. 21 Florida State on Friday night in Assembly Hall, IU coach Felisha Legette-Jack said missed foul shots made the difference in the game.

Cheers to sports bars!

·

One of the disguised blessings of the proliferation of obscure sports channels is that people are occasionally forced to congregate in public to see the game. Many actually have to leave the comfort of their domain if they want to catch the Hoosiers these days.

Ruling the road

·

A year after finishing 3-8 on the road, the IU men’s basketball team won its first road game of the season Saturday night against a tough Southern Illinois squad 64-51. The win snapped Southern Illinois’ 15-game home winning streak.

QB Zac Robinson a pass-run threat

·

If the statistics are any indication, the Hoosiers will go to the desert in Tempe, Ariz., for a shootout against the Cowboys.

Charitable hunters in Lawrence County and surrounding areas are being offered the chance to do their good deed for the day by donating deer to a new program to feed the hungry.
