Obesity conference to take place at IU

IU will host its first conference on obesity, “Obesity: Causes, Consequences and Policy Challenges” starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday in Wylie Hall Room 005. The conference, sponsored by the Bureau of Social Science Research and the Department of Economics, will feature various researchers and professors presenting topics such as “Free Trade Makes You Fat,” “The Economics of Obesity” and “Public Views on the Causes of Obesity.”

Diwali: ‘The biggest holiday for Hindus’

How the WGA Strike affects you

For almost all television fans – not just die-hards that get jacked for up-fronts – the worst has officially happened. As of 12:01 this past Monday morning, the Writers Guild of America is on strike against the major studios and producers, halting new script production on most shows. The writers have demanded larger residuals on DVD sales and a pay system for the creation of “media items” such as online content.

On Sept. 1, the Mountaineers of Appalachian State, a small Football Championship Subdivision (formerly named “Division I-AA”) school, made football history by beating the fifth-ranked Michigan Wolverines on their own field. The upset sent shockwaves through the sports community, as it gave sudden credence to the abilities of these lesser-known athletes.

Scheduling horrors

Scheduling events is a nightmare. First, you can never find a time and date that works for everybody. Second, you struggle and fail to avoid conflicts with other events. Third, you are always having problems getting people to come. It’s a fact of life and a problem that cannot be solved.

Given the large amounts of money students and tax payers shell out for higher education, it’s not surprising that more and more people are becoming concerned about the accountability and efficiency of colleges and universities. John P. Campbell, associate vice president for teaching and learning technologies at Purdue, has tried to cast a new data-mining program that monitors student progress in this light, arguing that preventing students from failing a class increases the value of their tuition.

However, we would like to correct some misinformation that was put forth in the editorial. First, the Student Alumni Association proudly coordinates all of the IU-Bloomington Homecoming activities.
