Longing for the long run

·

Cross-country running in high school proved to be a most rewarding experience. My first season got me acquainted with the burly captain of the wrestling team who took running as seriously as he did studying. One of those self-proclaimed “seniors-who-just-don’t-care,” he taught me an invaluable lesson of high school (and formal education)’s true value and purpose.

Where to read

·

An article in the New York Times last week addressed the issue of reading and the Internet. Some experts claim the Internet hinders reading levels. Others claim it doesn’t because the Internet requires at least some form of reading, unlike other types of electronic media.

It's no Park Place

·

For most, the Bloomington experience is something that begins when they arrive at IU at the age of 18, but I’ve been here since I was 4. In that time, I have had the pleasure of seeing the downtown area transform into an industrious and somewhat peaceful part of town. The hustle and bustle give you a city feeling but with a small-town charm. It was not always that way.

Used to it

·

It really is amazing what we can just “get used to.” Practices that feel downright ridiculous to us at first quickly become just another part of our daily routine. I bought an iron that straightens my wet hair as it dries it. At first this kind of felt like a bad idea; every time I used it my bathroom would fill with steam and the smell of burnt popcorn. But after a while I stopped worrying about it, and as I explained to my concerned roommate, I’ve actually come to like the sizzling sound it makes as it slides through my hair.

A bitter anniversary

This weekend marked the anniversary of the enactment of Bloomington’s smoking ban, and of what is perhaps its most apparent contradiction: In a city marked by an abundance of freedom, people don’t have the choice to smoke inside.

21 doesn't add up

·

With the near two hour running time and vast talents of Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne, I was expecting great things. I suppose like many before me I was distracted by the Las Vegas glitz and glamour because this movie about counting cards does not add up to a hit.

Asst. Fire Marshal changes smoke detector law

·

Thirteen years ago, James Bennett witnessed the first fatality of his firefighting career when he had to carry a 12-year-old girl out of a house fire in Connersville, Ind. Ten years later, a young man died in another fire, the second death of Bennett’s career. Both tragedies might have been prevented had there simply been smoke detectors in the homes where those fires broke out.

·

The Indianapolis Star reported Monday that IU coach Tom Crean received a two-year contract extension until the 2017-2018 season, although the coach has yet to sign an actual contract with the University. IU officials declined comment about the status of the contract.

IU employees, provost weigh in on effectiveness of campus smoking ban

·

Josh Olsson, a housekeeper for the Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel and Conference Center, took a cigarette break with fellow employees Tuesday on Seventh Street. He remembers when there was a specific smoking area near his work place, but because of the campus-wide smoking ban, employees are only allowed one smoking area – in front of the IMU on the circle drive.

Thursday is the last day to adopt two felines for the price of one at the Bloomington Animal Shelter. In celebration of June being American Humane Society’s National Adopt-a-Cat Month, and because cats breed in the spring and have kittens in the summer, the promotion continued through July.
