Team takes to road for second consecutive weekend

The IU baseball team is taking its game on the road for the second consecutive weekend. This time, the Hoosiers will compete in the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. IU will meet three teams, facing Eastern Kentucky and Wagner Friday and Winthrop Saturday. It will finish the weekend in the consolation or championship game Sunday.

IU looks to rebound in final home game

Fresh off a heartbreaking loss to Miami (Ohio) for the Midwest Collegiate Hockey League conference championship, the hockey team plays host to its final home series of the season against Chicago's Robert Morris College at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at the Frank Southern Center.

For the fourth consecutive week, the women's tennis team will take to the road. Protecting their 7-2 record, the Hoosiers will travel for a clash with Tennessee 11 a.m. Sunday.

Almost 30 students traveled from IU to Purdue to hear the message of Judy Shepard, the mother of the gay University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, who was killed in 1998. Shepard spoke about her personal experiences and the prevention of hate crimes in front of about 1,200 people Wednesday night.

Council overturns veto 6-3

The decision has been made, but the controversy continues. McDoel Garden was declared a conservation district by a vote of 6-3 in a city council meeting Wednesday. The council overruled Mayor John Fernandez's veto of the decision made at the Feb. 9 meeting. The vote was identical in both meetings, with David Sabbagh (R-5), Jeffrey Willsey (D-4) and Jason Banach (R-2) voting against the petition.

Entering the Rocky River riding arena, one might get goosebumps. The 30-degree temperature might seem chilling, but not if you are Kyle Hommel. The young boy does not appear phased by the cold; instead, he looks straight ahead and drops his jaw as his friend, Mace, appears.

Protesters: U.S. policy on Iraq flawed

Touting a sign that said, "Stop the Sanctions," freshman Matt Berghs was part of a small army of protesters gathered Thursday evening at the Sample Gates. Berghs and a dozen other activists, mainly from the Bloomington Coalition for Peace, met to give a voice to people they believe don't have one. They protested U.N. sanctions against Iraq and airstrikes President George W. Bush ordered earlier this week.

Lilly Endowment gives grant for green spaces

Indianapolis residents can expect to see an increase in the number of green spaces speckled throughout the city. Lilly Endowment announced Wednesday it would grant Keep Indianapolis Beautiful $300,000 this year -- double the company's normal donatation to the organization. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the beautification of Indianapolis. Its activities include picking up litter, planting trees and painting and repairing houses, according to the Web site at www.kab.org.

Honegger plays

Senior basketball player Rachael Honegger was allowed to play her final game in Assembly Hall Thursday night, after serving a five-game suspension for pleading guilty to forgery. Thursday's 54-50 loss against Illinois was the final home game of the 2000-01 season for the Hoosiers. Honegger did not speak to the press after the game, but did address the crowd during the ceremonies honoring the two IU seniors.

Human rights discussed

Activist Leslie Kretzu began her speech Wednesday by quoting Gandhi, saying, "Poverty is the worst form of violence." The lecture, "American Activists Starve on Nike Sweatshop Wage in Indonesia," featured Jim Keady, a former soccer professional, and Kretzu, a human rights activist.

Speaker addresses 'last closet' problem for gay athletes

Introducing soccer coach Dan Woog to an audience of about 25 people Wednesday night in Morrison Hall, Jesse Moyens described his own experience with the IU men's soccer team. Moyens was the head student manager of the team from early 1998 through the summer of 2000, when he told family, friends and team members he is gay.
