When IU selected Michael McNeely as its new athletics director, it got what a University vice president described as a "football guy." McNeely has spent the last two years as the vice president and chief operating officer for the NFL's San Diego Chargers. He's also had stints with two college athletic departments and was director of operations for the NCAA.

As an assistant football coach at the University of Colorado in the early 1980s, Michael McNeely helped rebuild the Buffaloes to a national power. He's being asked to do it again. Only this time, it's as IU's athletics director. IU President Myles Brand announced the hiring of McNeely at a press conference Thursday.

Founders Day Ceremony to honor professors, students

IU will celebrate its 181st birthday this weekend with the annual Founders Day ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday in Assembly Hall. The University will honor 15 professors and an associate instructor for their outstanding teaching, research or service, as well as students who've earned academic honors in the previous two semesters.

Irish playwright Brian Friel's "Translations" explores the destructive and healing powers of language, and how one's native tongue shapes one's identity. "Translations" opens at 8 p.m. today at the University Theatre.

Police arrested a man after a fight at Kilroy's on Kirkwood, 502 E. Fifth St., early Wednesday morning, police said. Another man said he had been struck with a fist and was shouted at as he left the bar, police reports said. After the man fell to the ground, the first man continued to hit him, police said.
