As a prospective politician, I am often asked what I would do to change the world. Surely after expecting to hear about my plans to cure world hunger and erase poverty, these people are a little surprised when I say that my first priority as commander-in-chief would be to produce more of the Add Sheet.

Final games to decide Stanley Cup

Two teams stand on the brink of greatness and immortality, with only the other in their way. For the Colorado Avalanche, a win tonight and another in Game 7 Saturday night in Colorado, will make them the winners of the Stanley Cup, the championship trophy of the NHL. For the New Jersey Devils, all that remains for them is to win tonight on home ice to be the owners of Lord Stanley\'s Cup for a second straight year.

Officials uncaring toward students

At the IU board of trustees meeting Tuesday, IU President Myles Brand and the trustees voted to raise tuition 7.5 percent on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses, and 6.5 percent at the rest of the regional campuses. This will result in a $340 rise in tuition for in-state students and almost a $1,000 rise for out-of-state students.

Growing beauty

Every day thousands of students, faculty and visitors walk, run, bike and even stroll through the IU campus. Rich with tradition and aesthetic beauty, IU's campus has been critically acclaimed for decades. In 1991 Thomas Gaines compiled a list of 100 campuses and evaluated them for urban space, the quality of architecture, landscaping and overall visual and physical appeal. IU was fifth on the list only after Stanford, Princeton, Wellsley and Colorado universities.

IUSA approves 2001-2002 budget

In preparation for a new year with new challenges and responsibilities, the IU Student Association passed the budget bills for the 2001-2002 fiscal year in their May 31 meeting. The group passed three budgetary proposals, allocating their funds within the main budget, the Assisted Inter-organizational Development budget and the IUSA-run Safety Escort program.

3 arrested for Union Planter's Bank robbery

Bloomington police have arrested three men suspected of robbing the Union Planter's Bank May 25. A Bloomington Police Department spokesman said 23-year-old Evansville resident Dutsel S. Greene was stopped for a traffic offense in Evansville on the day of the robbery. After he was stopped, Evansville police found cash from the robbery in his car. Under interogation by Evansville police, Greene impicated two other men in the robbery -- Mount Vernon resident Travis Sutton, 18, and Evansville resident Anthony Sapp, 19.

Group educates in Kenya

While most students his age were spending the waning May afternoons lounging in the sun, junior Kunal Desai was boarding a plane to Jambo, Kenya, preparing to spend a summer in which he'd forget himself to better help others. While his contemporaries face the world around 11 a.m., Desai wakes daily at 7 a.m. to begin teaching at a tiny Kenyan preschool. For three hours a day, his patience is tested, his spirit tried. Yet for Desai, it's all worth it as his students serenade him with traditional Swahili songs.

GE lays off 922

Joe Roberts came to Bloomington six years ago after General Electric closed down his place of employment, an appliance factory in Cincinnati. An unskilled worker who didn't have much choice, he took up GE's offer to relocate him and his family. And now he's looking at migrating again. "It's happened so many times," he said. "It just has a numbing effect."

Trustees to consider tuition hike Tuesday

IU's board of trustees will likely approve the University's largest tuition increase in five years Tuesday. It could mean at least a $200 increase in tuition for in-state students and a $650 increase for out-of-state students. University officials would not say how much of a tuition increase they will recommend to the board of trustees but admitted they have a target number. The trustees will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis to discuss and approve tuition rates. The meeting is open to the public.

An Incident to remember

For their first studio release in more than three years, The String Cheese Incident brought in Los Lobos producer Steve Berlin and created a gem of an album. The Colorado-based group's bluegrass roots are cleverly intertwined with soul, reggae and R&B flavors to make a wonderfully put together record. The massive amount of time spent touring in that three-year absence from the studio is apparent on almost every track on the record. I would find it difficult to skip tracks on this album -- you would be missing something if you did.

'Moulin Rouge' alluring, enjoyable eye candy

This weekend, Australian director Baz Luhrmann's glittering cinematic eye candy "Moulin Rouge" opened in theaters across the country, and unless you have already written off postmodern filmmaking as the shameless recycling of trite plot sequences, some of the stylistic tricks Luhrmann orchestrates here are definitely worth seeing. Also, it's hard not to be taken in by a director who's so obviously in love with the story he's trying to tell.

Hoosiers recognized with top awards

After taking the Big Ten Outdoor Championships two weeks ago, the women's track team captured seven All-American honors at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., with three coming on the final day. It's the most since 1990 and a tie with the most All-Americans IU's women's team has had at an outdoor championships at once. The number brings the total number of women's outdoor All-Americans to 28.

Davis named coach of Big Ten squad

Just a couple months ago, Mike Davis was wondering whether or not he would be the next head coach for IU's men's basketball team. Not only will he be leading the Hoosiers into action next season, he will be the leader for the conference's best as he heads up the Big Ten foreign tours team in August. The trip will feature games in England and Ireland Aug. 8-19.

Coverage of Jenna Bush justified

Last week, Jenna Bush, one of President George W. Bush's 19-year-old twin daughters, was cited for attempting to purchase alcohol with a fake ID at a restaurant in Austin, Texas. This is the second time in a little more than a month that the Bush daughter has been busted by the police in connection to alcohol. She was issued a ticket for underage drinking at an Austin nightclub April 27th.

Employees purchase Worm's Way

What started started ten years ago as a bait shop by Lake Monroe has become an interstate enterprise and is now officially owned by its employees. Worm's Way Garden Center, which sells hydroponic growing equipment and home brewing supplies, is now 30 percent owned by its employees after a stock transfer from majority owner and founder Martin Heydt. It is billing itself as the first company in its industry to be employee-owned. Bloomington Worm's Way general manager Claude Eastridge said the employees don't actually have to pay for the stock -- rather the stock will become part of their benefits package through the employee's work equity. The stock is divided among Worm's Way's 50 full-time employees according to their percentage of the payroll. The more they're paid, the more stock they get.

Penske dominates race

INDIANAPOLIS -- As the remaining laps dwindled, rookie driver Helio Castrovenes threaded his way through traffic and widened his lead at the Indianapolis 500. A wave of relief came over owner Roger Penske, a longtime 500 legend who won for a record 11th time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday in the 85th running of the "Greatest Spectacle of Racing." After a six-year hiatus, Penske returned in a triumphal fashion. Castrovenes and teammate Gil de Ferran swept the top two positions in Penske's first visit back to Brickyard since 1994.

IUPD chief resigns

In a 1988 protest at the University president's office, students demanded that black officers be hired for the IU Police Department. The department had none at the time. Already a lieutenant for IU's Indianapolis campus police force, Paul Norris transferred to IU in 1989 and became IU Bloomington's only black officer.

Student robbed in Fine Arts computer lab

IU police report a female IU student was robbed Sunday at knife point. The student called police to report the robbery, which took place at about 2:15 a.m. in room 215 of the Fine Arts Building computer lab.

Controversial study says homosexuality is 'a choice'

When Chris Mandeville was 24, he made a confession. Following his college graduation, the LaPorte, Ind., native found "home" at a church in Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he divulged the secret of his homosexual feelings to a Christian counselor. That counselor referred him to Overcomers, an "ex-gay ministry" designed to assist individuals in resolving homosexual tendencies. Though cynical at the outset, Mandeville regularly attended weekly meetings of the group. Encouraging participants to develop "normal" relationships with men and establish support groups to hinder them from "acting out," or engaging in homosexual relationships, Overcomer's leaders lauded the ability of prayer, fellowship and the Holy Spirit to modify homosexual behavior.
