Teacher quits job rather than modify theory of evolution

He stated his beliefs in 95 theses that he nailed to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany -- the town where he lived in 1517. For this act of defiance against the Catholic Church, religious reformer Martin Luther was excommunicated four years later. Dan Clark did somewhat less last month - he quit his job teaching chemistry at Jefferson High School rather than modify his teachings about evolution. Yet it was an act of defiance also done in the name of God, a personal testimony that many people wouldn't make today. Teaching religion - that's what Lafayette School Corp.

Hoosiers to face off against Northwestern, Wisconsin

The women's soccer team will start its Big Ten schedule Friday as they play Northwestern and conclude the road trip at No. 23 Wisconsin Sunday. The team is also playing its first game since a 1-0 overtime win over Xavier Sept. 9. The Hoosiers went 3-1 in their non-conference games, and are currently ranked No. 10 by Soccer Buzz Magazine for the Great Lakes Region.

Cardinals shut out in high-scoring game

After struggling to score only three goals in its first four games, the IU men's soccer team was looking for a breakout game. The Hoosiers might have found one Thursday night in Louisville. IU (3-2-0), eclipsed its total goal output for the season by pouring in four goals and shutting out the Cardinals, 4-0.

IU makes few changes to security

Notre Dame consulted with the FBI and canceled Friday night stadium tours. Police will check the seating and concourse areas with dogs before Purdue plays the Fighting Irish Saturday. But at IU, normal security will be in effect for IU's 4 p.m. game against Utah Saturday. Following the terrorist attacks on the United States, sporting venues across the country have beefed up security. IU has made few changes in its regular security routine.

Museum to hold archaeology exhibit

Questions of the past such as what people ate, how they made their tools and what life was like in ancient cultures leave many people wondering. Saturday those questions will be answered at the Mathers Museum which will host "Discovering Archaeology" from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Team travels to face Michigan, UMass

Coming off a hard-fought performance of the season against Stanford more than a week ago, the field hockey team looks to get its first win of the season as it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. The Hoosiers will battle No. 4 Michigan Sunday in their first Big Ten conference game of the season. Prior to meeting the Wolverines, the Hoosiers will face off against the Massachusetts Minutemen Saturday in a non-conference match-up.

Hoosiers prepared for Big Ten play

The Big Ten season starts tonight for the volleyball team, and it said it is psyched and prepared to show what it's made of. Having the last four games postponed has not hurt the team's readiness to play. In fact, coach Katie Weismiller said the team has become better prepared for the two important games this weekend.

Hoosiers open 2001 season at Northern Invitational

The Hoosiers will finally start their season this weekend in Champaign, Ill., at the Northern Invitational. Their original opening tournament, the Mary Fossum Invitational, was postponed in the wake of terrorist attacks on the United States. Head coach Sam Carmichael will fill out his lineup with sophomore Karen Dennison in the top spot, followed by fellow sophomores Mary Lidester and Danah Ford, junior Cara Stuckey and senior captain Tiffany Fisher. Sophomore Ambry Bishop will travel with the team to compete as an individual.

Remembering the finer things in life

For the last week or so, I have generally avoided reading or watching too much coverage of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington because it generally made me angry or depressed, or both. It is hard enough coming to grips with what happened without a sensationalized media running images of body bags and people jumping out of the World Trade Center. Quite simply, it all became overwhelming, and I realized that if I got caught up in it too much, I would become stuck in an emotional and spiritual morass that would have jaded my thinking and darkened my view of the world. In terms of recovering from tragedy, the development of such an outlook is neither healthy nor productive.

'One nation under God'

\"One nation under God", as stated in the Pledge of Allegiance, has caused much debate around the United States. The issue of prayer in schools, specifically the phrase of the pledge, is a widely known controversy. There have been several court cases that restrict the involvement of religion in a school's curriculum. One such case is Abington vs. Schempp in 1963, which struck down a Pennsylvania law requiring Bible reading and the Lord's prayer. As in many cases like this, the main argument was a violation of the First Amendment. Such cases have impacted the American society. Schools are no longer able to hold organized prayer within their walls.

Does Uncle Sam need me?

As I sat at home Sunday night, pretending to do homework, one of my roommates came down from his room bursting with excitement. He's a telecommunications major, so he loves TV, especially good TV, and he just saw a great show. It was "Band of Brothers" on HBO. Anyway, during his little discussion about the show, he brought up a quote from the show that really stuck with me and hit close to home about thoughts in my head the past week.

Whether it be donating blood, money or the time given by those volunteers in New York City and Washington cleanup and rescue efforts, there is a worldwide outpouring to ease the suffering of the victims of this heinous attacks. Around here at IU, different organizations are doing what they can to help.

Illinois connection gives an edge

Looking down the field hockey roster, one might notice something missing from the lineup. There is not a single player on the team from the state of Indiana. The field hockey team is one of only two varsity sports teams that do not have a homegrown competitor on the squad. But it does boast eight players from neighboring Illinois on its roster of 22.

So YOU wants to be rock stars. Local musicians Nick Niespodziani, Alyssa Finke, Peter Olson and Matt Sonnicksen are beat bouncing on television this week with a brand new music video. Here's the catch: most likely, only Bloomington residents will see the debut. YOU banded together to make the most of public resources by creating a music video of "Random Option," the first single from Better Live, the local act's sophomore CD release. But the video isn't headed for TRL -- these musicians will be dancing across the screens of channel 3 (41 in the residence halls), otherwise known as Bloomington's Cable Access Television Services.

Hoosiers head to Louisville

This week, as America has attempted to return to some semblemce of normal routine, athletes have returned to the playing fields. The men's soccer team will resume their schedule Thursday as they head to the University of Louisville. Head Coach Jerry Yeagley said the fact that many people are trying to get on with their lives, in spite of last week's tragedy, makes an important statement.
