Photographer Will Counts, who captured on film the bitter conflict over racial desegregation in Arkansas, and later taught generations of journalists the importance of images in chronicling the news, died of cancer Saturday.

State unemployment below average; Bloomington fares particularly well

Despite job losses in every major industrial category in Indiana, state unemployment is nearly 1 percent lower than the national average for the month of August, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The unemployment rate was calculated by excluding agriculture and self-employed workers.

Fraternity offers diverse events

Coinciding with Homecoming Week, the Alpha chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi will be offering several events across campus, aiming to have wide-ranging appeal among the student body. Tour guides offer view of campus to new students

Seniors Katie Buck and Kevin Pollack are the student directors for the 2001-2002 campus tour guide team. They head up a group of 63 students, ranging from sophomores to seniors, who volunteer their time every week to give tours to prospective students and parents.

U.S. explains attacks as 'self-defense' to U.N.

UNITED NATIONS -- The United States told the U.N. Security Council on Monday that it exercised its right to self-defense under the U.N. Charter in attacking targets in Afghanistan and said it may have to attack other countries to root out terrorism.

Mystics marvel new chancellor

Cult film director to speak to campus

Silent Bob will speak. Kevin Smith, the man who created the characters Jay and Silent Bob in cult-favorite films such as "Clerks" and "Mallrats," will give a short lecture followed by an extended question-and-answer session at 8 p.m., Oct. 26 at the IU Auditorium.

Afghanistan faces U.S. air strikes for second night

WASHINGTON -- The United States pounded terrorist targets in Afghanistan from the air for a second night Monday in an effort to undercut the Taliban militia sheltering Osama bin Laden. Anti-Taliban forces inside Afghanistan appeared ready to strike in concert with the American barrage. As U.S. warplanes and naval forces unleashed assaults halfway around the world, the Bush administration raised its guard at home.

Team makes strides in bad weather

Friday was one of the gloomiest days of the school year. It was cold, rainy, and windy. But the bad weather did not stop the men's cross-country team from participating in the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend. Despite lackluster running conditions, the team took a turn in the right direction.

Team improves, finishes 8th

The Hoosiers went to South Bend Friday in hopes of turning things around. They took a step in the right direction by placing eighth among the 17 teams in the event. IU was within 30 points of fourth place.

James Dean fans commemorate legend's life, career and death

FAIRMONT, IND. -- Every year on Sept. 30, thousands of people are drawn to a small town in northeast Indiana. They come from all over the globe for one reason, for one person who isn't even there anymore: James Dean. Fairmount, the town where Dean grew up, has become the annual magnet for people who want to celebrate his life and his image. They participate in parades and look-alike contests, place flowers on his grave and have been known to even steal his headstone.
