Holland series delayed

The James P. Holland Memorial Lecture Series by Dr. S. Allen Counter, scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday, was postponed. A new date has not been announced.\nDuring his 30 years of teaching at IU, Holland acquired every major teaching award IU offers. As a professor of biology at IU and associate and interim dean of the University Graduate School, Holland touched the lives of more than 11,000 students. \nBut March 24, 1998, his career was cut short when he lost his battle with cancer.\nThe lecture series is in honor of Holland; there is no charge and the public is welcome.\nThe Department of Biology, the Office of the Vice President for Student Development and Diversity and the Office of Multicultural Affairs are sponsoring the second-annual event. Counter, a professor at Harvard Medical School, will lecture on "Matthew Henson and the North Pole Secret." Outside of his teaching position, Counter is a professional explorer. \nCounter studied in South America and Greenland and also focused his studies on Henson, an African-American explorer who was part of the team sent to the Arctic in 1909. Counter's reports influenced the National Geographic Society to honor Henson as one of America's great explorers. Because of Counter's work, Henson's remains were later moved by presidential order to Arlington National Cemetery to rest alongside Robert Peary, the leader of the group to first explore the North Pole.
