Women's rush begins with 19 Party

A group of women stood in front of every sorority house on campus at about 11 a.m. Saturday, nervously laughing and doing some last-minute clasping and readjusting of their outfits and accessories. When the doors finally opened, the women stared raptly ahead as the deafening cheers of the sorority members trembled and erupted out of the houses.

Team honored at annual banquet

Madison, Wis. -- Thursday night, before the men's soccer team claimed the Big Ten Championship crown, many Hoosier players were honored at the Big Ten awards banquet.

Forwards step up, lead Hoosiers to victory

In the closing minutes of Friday's game, senior guard Tara Jones stood tall with her back to the basket and blocked a desperate shot by the Premier All-Stars' Tez Kraft. Kraft is listed as an inch shorter than Jones, but at that moment Jones towered over the former University of Massachusetts forward.

Big Ten televised games decrease

After seasons of constant television coverage, the men's basketball team will take a hit this season. And we have the economy to thank, IU Media Relations Director Jeff Fanter said. Seven of IU's first 12 games -- including two exhibition contests -- will not be televised.

Pacifism provides delusion of utopia

The trouble with Dunn Meadow peace campers is, as you may have noticed, the peace campers themselves. They just can't seem to shake the image of being "crazy hippies." Grubby long beards, disheveled clothes, and an odd odor don't help in converting people. Besides, they rotate who stays there at night. That's sort of like having a hunger strike, but rotating who fasts and who doesn't.

Bin Laden says he'll evade capture

Osama bin Laden said he had nothing to do with the anthrax attacks in the United States, and declared he would never allow himself to be captured, in the second part of a newspaper interview published Sunday. "America can't get me alive," bin Laden was quoted as saying. "I can be eliminated, but not my mission."

Bush recognizes Palestine

"Palestine'' entered the U.S. government lexicon with President George W. Bush's speech to the United Nations. Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that it reflected the administration's vision of two states, Israel and Palestine, side by side.

Fraternity honors stellar students

Acacia fraternity held its Fall 2001 Achievement and Recognition Banquet to honor pledges, active members and alumni Sunday. The banquet, located at the Acacia house at 702 E. Third St., gave out lifetime service awards, as well as academic awards based on the accomplishments of last year's spring semester.

Group helps Special Olympians

Spirit of Sport volunteers supported local Special Olympians for a day of bowling Saturday. At the Classic Lanes bowling alley in Bloomington, many Area Ten Special Olympians competed to move from the regional level to state level in bowling. Although only a few of the Olympians get to move on to state, the event was fun for everyone.

IU Unity Walk aids relief funds

Residence Hall Association Student Services helped sponsor the IU Unity Walk Sunday, with proceeds benefitting the American Red Cross 9-11 National Disaster Relief Fund. The 5K walk began at 10 a.m. at the Mellencamp Pavilion.

IUSA studies business fee

Starting in the spring of 1999, business students were assessed an additional $200 on their bursar bill per semester. When the current IU Student Association executives began campaigning last spring, they made the investigation into the fee one of their priorities.

Council concerned over spending

The Bloomington city council raised concerns Wednesday night about proposed spending on outside legal counsel -- counsel that could help the city obtain federal dollars for the conversion of McDoel switchyard. Six council members opted to pass on the issue, which would transfer $200,000 from the city's current west side industries fund to pay for legal services in Washington. These services would help obtain federal grant money for completion of a plan passed lasted week, the alternative transportation plan.

Men's team earns national honors

The IU men's soccer team earned national honors Thursday as the team prepared to face Michigan in the Big Ten tournament at Madison, Wisc.

Art in Peoples Park emphasizes community

Holding tight to his mother and smiling, 5-year-old artist Daniel Davila relished the praise of an appreciative crowd yesterday in Peoples Park. Daniel and other contributing artists joined the Bloomington community in celebrating the completion of The Peoples Park Mosaic Tile Project. Thirteen area artists created tile mosaics in the park's foundation to depict multicultural themes and the power of nature. The mosaics are in the park's entrance off Kirkwood Avenue, just west of campus.

Family of deceased student to sue hospital, fraternity

The family of an IU student who died in February said it plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit today. The lawsuit will say that a fraternity and a local hospital played roles in their son's death, the family said Thursday. Seth Korona, 19, died Feb. 4 of bleeding in the brain caused by a skull fracture he sustained at a Jan. 27 party at Theta Chi. Korona was hospitalized two days later and remained in a coma until he was taken off life support. Monroe County Prosecutor Carl Salzmann decided not to file charges.

Spartans rivalry provides chance for revenge

It might not be the best team the Hoosiers have faced this year, and when the 2001-02 hockey season is said and done with, it certainly wouldn't have been the most important game the Hoosiers played this year. But rest assured, there are more than a few IU players who have Saturday night's match against Michigan State at the Frank Southern Center circled on their calendar.

Hoosiers have 'nothing to lose' at invite

The women's tennis team is preparing for battle this weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend. The Hoosiers will join Notre Dame, Texas A&M and Arizona in matches that only count towards individual records, not team records. "The big thing we're looking forward to this weekend is getting to play against good nationally ranked teams, that we normally don't get to play second semester," coach Lin Loring said. "It's got to be some of our best competition of the year."

Old friends in new locations

The ferry was just leaving the port of Argentia and the rocky shores of Newfoundland when I thought of Calvin. As the huge ship glided through the early-morning mist, I reflected on the two weeks I had just spent traversing my ancestral home. For me, breathing the air on The Rock and gazing out onto the Atlantic Ocean from the hills of St. John's had been a moving, even life-altering experience. I had learned about where I came from, learned about the Newfie spirit and courage that courses through my veins.
